American Swedish Institute’s 2025 Exhibition Schedule

October 22, 2024 By Darby Johnson

MINNEAPOLIS—The American Swedish Institute Museum and cultural center announces their upcoming 2025 year of exhibitions beginning by hosting Lars Tunbjörk — A View From The Side, Ann Wolf: The Art of Living, and then presenting Salad Hilowle.

Opening January 11-February 9, ASI is hosting Lars Tunbjörk–A View From The Side showcasing the work of acclaimed Swedish photographer Lars Tunbjörk (1956–2015). Known for his warmth, humor, deep exploration of loneliness, and the search for meaning—Tunbjörk’s work invites viewers to pause and reflect, immersing them in the time, place, and process of his artistic journey.

Curated by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC in collaboration with the Lars Tunbjörk Foundation, this exhibition showcases a series of Tunbjörk’s iconic photographs.

ASI will present its next exhibition Ann Wolf: The Art of Living starting February 15-June 8, 2025, delving into the brilliance of internationally acclaimed Swedish artist Ann Wolff. This is the largest presentation of artworks by Wolff outside of Sweden, featuring works on loan from private collections, including the Minnesota based Cafesjian Art Trust.

Though Wolff is best known for her glass works and iconic “Snowball” design for Kosta Boda, this exhibition goes beyond Swedish glass houses, revealing the ingenuity of Wolff’s artistic work across various techniques and media from the early 2000s to the present day.

Her deeply personal approach to her life-long artistry extends beyond glass to metal, concrete, drawing and photography, exploring themes of identity, self-expression, and the art of living. This exhibition also features activation by a local dance ensemble, choreographed by interdisciplinary movement-based artist Laurie Van Wieren.

Later this June, ASI will host acclaimed Swedish artist, filmmaker, and writer Salad Hilowle. On view from June 21-October 26, 2025, this will be Hilowle’s first major solo exhibition outside of Sweden, curated by Berlin-based curator Sagal Farah.

Born in Somalia, Hilowle moved from Mogadishu to Gävle, Sweden, at the age of seven. The exhibition features video, photography, sculpture, textiles, and performance. Through shifts in context, scale, color, and material, Hilowle invites the viewer to examine the familiar as if for the very first time.

His work uncovers and makes visible the presence of African descendants within Swedish contexts, both past and present, offering a deeper understanding of the Afro-Swedish diaspora and diversity of the Afro-Swedish experience.

“As we enter 2025, ASI is thrilled to host these internationally acclaimed artists and curators, whose exhibitions will foster meaningful dialogue between art, place, and people,” says Molly Steenson, ASI President & CEO. “These exhibitions not only celebrate their contributions to the global art scene but also deepen our understanding of identity, memory, and the human experience. We look forward to engaging our visitors with these thought-provoking and inspiring works.”

More information about each exhibition and related programming will be announced and available on asimn.org.
