Questions About Visiting

Free parking is available in ASI’s lot at 27th Street and Park Avenue. View parking and directions.

Walk-up and advanced tickets are available for admission to the museum and the Turnblad Mansion. Same-day tickets are walk-up only.

Admission is not required to shop in the Museum Store or eat at FIKA Café. To reserve museum admission tickets, visit the tickets page or call 612-871-4907.

No. Food and beverages are not allowed in the Turnblad Mansion or exhibition galleries.

No. FIKA Café does not take reservations.

Restrooms are located on Level 1 of the Nelson Cultural Center near FIKA Café, on the Lower Level of the Turnblad Mansion, and on Level 2 of the Nelson Cultural Center directly above FIKA Café.

Family/all-gender restrooms and changing stations are located on the Lower Level of the Turnblad Mansion and Level 1 of the Nelson Cultural Center near FIKA Café. All are welcome to use the restroom of their choice.

Yes. Coat racks and lockers are available free of charge on Level 1 of the Nelson Cultural Center. Keys may be checked out at ASI’s Front Desk. Lockers and hangers fill quickly. ASI cannot store luggage during a visit.

Yes. Elevators in the Nelson Cultural Center and the Turnblad Mansion make ASI’s campus wheelchair friendly. Transport wheelchairs are available for complimentary use and may be checked out at ASI’s Front Desk. Wheelchairs may not be reserved in advance.

Visitors are welcome to nurse their child wherever it is most comfortable. There is a Quiet Room on the Lower Level of the Turnblad Mansion for those looking for privacy or a place to rest.

Yes! Photography is encouraged for social media or personal use (no flash, please!). Commissioned photography or formal portraits, including engagement photos, senior pictures, and family portraits, must be scheduled in advance and requires payment of a space use fee.

Yes! Admission is required to enter the Turnblad Mansion. Please be aware of other visitors—do not block pathways or viewing points. Please bring your own lapboard or clipboard and use only lead or colored pencils. Do not use walls, pedestals, or floors as supports for sketching.

The Holiday Exhibition typically opens mid-November.

ASI does not offer translation services, but we know lots of places that do. View the Swedish Translation Resources document.

ASI accepts collections & library donations on a very limited basis. The decision to accept something is based on many factors, including relevance and substance of materials, available documentation, condition and associated legal issues, and cost and storage concerns.

ASI rarely accepts bibles, hymnals, or other religious material.

Please contact ASI’s Director of Collections before bringing in any materials for donation. Unsolicited donations may be discarded. Include images and other identifying information in your email.

ASI awards in-kind donations based off several criteria, including supporting organizations in our immediate neighborhood, organizations we have an established relationship with, and organizations with direct ties to ASI’s mission and values.

ASI has many different rental venue options. All rentals require food and beverage from the on-site catering team Slate & Stone. Learn more about rental options. 

We offer several Museum Access Programs. Read all details on how to use these programs on the Hours & Prices page:

  • Free admission for Indigenous Peoples
  • Museums for All program for those with limited income
  • Reciprocal Museum Discount with participating ROAM museums. Check your membership card.
  • Blue Star Discount for active military members, veterans, and their families.
  • Free admission for personal care attendants, nurses, interpreters, or other specialized caregivers
  • Free admission through the  smARTpass program.

The visitor entrance is located at the northeast end of the free surface parking lot. Metro Mobility and visitors who need easy access may unload directly in front of the entrance prior to parking.

Designated accessible parking spaces are located on the eastern part of the ASI parking lot.

When the lot is full, unmetered street parking is available on most blocks surrounding ASI. Please refer to all posted street signs for parking restrictions.

Elevator service is available to all full floors of the Turnblad Mansion and Nelson Cultural Center.

Transport wheelchairs are available for complimentary use on the ASI campus. If you’d like to use a wheelchair, please ask at the Front Desk.

Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located in the Lower Level of the Turnblad Mansion and on Level 1 and Level 2 of the Nelson Cultural Center.

Listening-amplification equipment is available upon request for tours or events with a speaker.

Interpreters may be requested for visits with two weeks’ notice, pending availability.

Certified and trained service animals are welcome. Emotional support animals and pets are not permitted on the ASI campus.

ASI has partnered with Capption to expand guest accessibility to exhibit information.

Capption makes exhibit information instantly available for all visitors directly on their smartphone. By translating text into the precise format they need, Capption helps all visitors feel connected, avoid discouragement, and spark lasting curiosity. Available in 136+ languages.

Light, portable stools are available throughout the museum and can be used for seating within ASI’s galleries.

Family Amenities

Families with children of all ages are welcome at ASI to learn through play, explore interactive gallery space, and take part in handcraft, food, language, and cultural programs.

Strollers are welcome at ASI and may be taken into all but select exhibitions. Umbrella strollers may be checked out at the Front Desk for on-campus use. Oversized strollers, including jogging strollers and side-by-side strollers, must be left outside of the Turnblad Mansion.

ASI offers an outdoor playcart April–October (weather permitting) which features toys, tools, and surprises for young visitors as they explore ASI’s fenced outdoor courtyard.

ASI’s Family Gallery encourages the youngest visitors to play, touch, read, and learn. The Family Gallery exhibition rotates annually.

Not every house has a Tomte, but the Turnblad Mansion does! Write a letter to Tomte and drop it in his mailbox located in the turret on Level 3 of the Turnblad Mansion.
