ASI Presents “Ann Wolff: The Art of Living”

Explore identity, transformation, and aging this spring through the eyes of these interdisciplinary artists
January 23, 2025 By Darby Johnson

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—This spring, The American Swedish Institute museum and cultural center will host Ann Wolff: The Art of Living, a compelling exhibition exploring identity, transformation, and the art of aging. On view from February 15-June 8, this exhibition features the work of internationally acclaimed Swedish artist Ann Wolff alongside local artists Nancy Randall and Laurie Van Wieren.

Ann Wolff (b. 1937) has dedicated over six decades to her craft, not limiting herself to any specific medium—glass, bronze, aluminum, stone, concrete, photography, and drawing. Her career began at the renowned Swedish glassworks Kosta Boda, where she designed one of its most iconic products, Snöbollen (Snowball), which remains one of Kosta Boda’s most successful products ever, with more than 15 million copies sold all over the world. Since then, Ann has continued to push the boundaries of self-expression, reflecting on themes of identity and the interplay between inner and outer selves.

Ann Wolff’s sculptures and drawings serve as the inspiration for local artist Laurie Van Wieren’s choreographed performances. These movement-based interpretations begin with simple gestures that gradually evolve into deeply personal and reflective explorations of self-identity. In-gallery activations will take place on select evenings in March and April, culminating in a full-length final performance on May 24 at 7 pm.

Local artist Nancy Randall’s works will also be featured in the exhibition, displayed around the Turnblad Mansion. Spanning seven decades, Randall’s art delves into themes of birth, evolution, aging, and rebirth, complementing and contributing to the themes of Wolff’s work.

Join ASI for First Look: Ann Wolff: the Art of Living a special exhibition preview event on Saturday, February 15. This night features a panel discussion and a special dance performance led by Laurie Van Wieren.

“Ann Wolff’s work invites us to reflect on identity and the passage of time in deeply personal and universal ways. Paired with the voices of local artists, this exhibition offers a profound exploration of what it means to embrace the art of living,” said ASI’s Director of Exhibitions Erin Stromgren.
