Collections Spotlight: Carl Larsson

The American Swedish Institute is thrilled to add a remarkable second painting by Carl Larsson to its collection, thanks to the generous 2020 donation from Marilyn Carlson Nelson. This work, Esbjörn som Tänkare (Esbjörn as a Thinker), made its debut in the recent exhibition Karin Larsson: Let the Hand be Seen, held from June 8 through October 27, 2024. 

 This exhibition highlighted the artistic legacy of Swedish artist Karin Larsson, renowned for her innovative textiles that blend traditional techniques with modern design elements. Karin’s enduring influence is evident in her husband, Carl Larsson’s,iconic depictions of family life. From vibrant interiors to rustic furniture, the Larsson home was designed by Karin, who filled it with bold colors, modern textiles, and unique furnishings that have captivated viewers for generations. 

This new donation transports us to a peaceful moment in 1903, offering us a glimpse into the Larsson household. Carl has depicted his three-year-old son, Esbjörn, seated at the end of a notably long table in the garden of their Sundborn home in Sweden.  

When Carl Larsson was asked why the table was given such a significant part in the painting, Carl remarked, “It is an unusually long table that was the model. It stands in my own garden, behind the house, and has room for Karin and me, seven kids, the cat, as well as for friends and acquaintances – and even strangers – who wish to come and see how we live.” – Carl Larsson
