ASI Presents “Lars Tunbjörk – A View From The Side”

A One-Month Exhibition Showcasing the Iconic Work of Renowned Swedish Photographer Lars Tunbjörk
December 27, 2024 By Darby Johnson

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—The American Swedish Institute museum and cultural center is delighted to announce Lars Tunbjörk – A View From The Side, the captivating photography of acclaimed Swedish photographer Lars Tunbjörk (1956–2015). Running from January 11 to February 9, 2025, this collection offers an intimate look at Tunbjörk’s vivid and iconic photography, transporting visitors into the time, place, and process of his creative journey.

Tunbjörk started with photography at the age of 15 and soon established himself as one of Sweden’s most prominent press photographers. In 1993, he created his breakthrough photo project on Sweden, Landet utom sig. The photographs on display in this exhibition are from the series Landet utom sig (1993), Office (2001), Home (2003), and Winter (2007).

Known for his warmth, humor, deep exploration of loneliness, and the search for meaning, Tunbjörk’s work invites viewers to pause and reflect. His photographs are often described as deadpan—offering a documentarian-like snapshot into the absurd yet familiar.

Curated by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C., in collaboration with the Lars Tunbjörk Foundation, this month-long exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the distinctive work of one of Sweden’s most celebrated photographers.
