American Swedish Institute – Thursday Night Music in the Courtyard Series

MINNEAPOLIS — The American Swedish Institute (ASI) is hosting a new Thursday night Music in the Courtyard series, running 6 – 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings from July 15–August 19, 2021.

The ASI, which includes the ASI Museum with a rotating schedule of international and local exhibitions and a full slate of programs, classes and workshops; the acclaimed FIKA Café and the ASI Museum Store, recently announced the extension of Thursday hours until 8 p.m.

Evening is a perfect time to enjoy the fine food of FIKA in the courtyard, recognized as one of the top outdoor spots in the Twin Cities (even better combined with music). Visitors can also tour the Museum and shop the Store’s excellent selection of Nordic-inspired items. The music series is included in museum admission.

Thursday Night Music in the Courtyard Series

  • Thursday, July 29, 6–7 p.m.: SlovCzech is a folk-rock band specializing in central European folk music with modern attitude
  • Thursday, August 5, 6–7 p.m.: Tjärnblom (woodland lake flower) is a Scandinavian-style string band featuring a beautiful blend of nyckelharpa, octave mandolin, harmonium and cello, mixing old and new Swedish, Finnish, Minnesota and original tunes for dancing and listening. They’ve performed across the Midwest and on Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion show.
  • Thursday, August 12, 6–7 p.m.: ALLSÅNG PÅ ASI (Everybody Sing at ASI) Take up the popular Swedish tradition of joining the crowd and singing Swedish and other songs together!
  • Thursday, August 19, 6–7 p.m.:  Paul Dahlin, family, friends (& paid associates).

Previous performers:

  • Thursday, July 15, 6–7 p.m.: Art Bjorngjeld and Ross Sutter. Accordion meets guitar and vocals in a joyful outpouring of Swedish and Nordic folk tunes from two specialists in the field.
  • Thursday, July 22, 6–7 p.m.: The McNordiques with special guest Marc Anderson on percussion, lay down a captivating mix of Scandinavian, Celtic and French music with Renee Vaughan on nyckelharpa, Tom Klein on uilleann pipes and Dan Newton on accordion.

MUSEUM ADMISSION: $12 adults, $8 seniors ages 62 +, $6 ages 6–18 and full-time students with ID. Free for ASI members and children ages 5 and under.

HOURS — ASI, FIKA & THE MUSEUM STORE

  • Thursday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • The ASI, FIKA and the Store are closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • The full FIKA lunch menu and counter service are available 11 a.m. –  3 p.m.
