Research visit request

The American Swedish Institute welcomes and encourages researchers to make use of its collections. We make every effort to accommodate research requests, however, mitigating circumstances (including but not limited to inaccessibility, fragility, and time constraints) may restrict access to some materials.

When you submit this form, it will not automatically collect your details like name and email address unless you provide it yourself.

Policies & procedures

Please review our policies and procedures before submitting a research visit request below.

  • Research visits are available by appointment only. ASI accommodates research visits on Tuesdays through Thursday, from 10 am–2 pm. Please submit requests at least two weeks in advance.
  • Please ensure that you have an appointment to visit the collections. Upon your arrival, let a Visitor Services Associate at the front desk know the purpose of your visit, and they will contact Collections staff to take you to the appropriate area.
  • Stack areas are closed to researchers. Materials can only be retrieved by Collections staff.
  • Laptops, phones, and cameras are permitted. Please consult with Collections staff if you need to bring other devices to conduct your research.
  • No food or beverages allowed in the Archives and Collections spaces.

  • For archival materials, only one box may be used at a time. Remove only one folder at a time, using an “Out Card” to mark its place within the box.
  • Archival materials must lie flat on the table; do not place items in your lap or hold them up. Do not rest objects on them or take notes on top of materials.
  • No marks may be made on any artifact, material, or object.
  • Handle materials with clean, dry hands. Use gloves if requested to do so.
  • Staff may request the removal of potentially damaging jewelry and accessories from a visitor’s attire before allowing access to study areas.
  • Only pencils can be used to take notes. Pens or highlighters are not permitted.

  • Researchers may use a digital camera to create copies of materials for personal use.
  • For archival materials, Collections staff can create a limited number of high-resolution scans at no charge. Any additional scans may incur a processing fee.
  • To credit ASI’s collections in an article or paper, or to use an image for publication, please consult a member of the Collections team.
