About ASI / Instructors / Melba Granlund

Melba Granlund

Melba Granlund was born and raised in Minnesota by Swedish immigrant parents (who were apparently part Norwegian!), and has been living and breathing folk traditions since childhood. With a focus on traditional techniques, Melba has studied many forms of textile handcrafts, receiving both formal and informal instruction in the U.S. as well as in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Her teaching philosophy encompasses not only the techniques, but also the historical and cultural context in which they were developed. Melba strives to instill an appreciation of the beauty and uniqueness of Scandinavian handcraft traditions in her students so these skills and techniques are not lost or forgotten. If students choose to adopt these same principles, then her job is done.
