The time when syrener–that is, lilacs–bloom is as much beloved in Sweden as in Minnesota. It tends to happen a little later in Sweden–late May or early June. Jag tycker att doften av syren är världens ljuvligaste. I think the scent of lilacs is the sweetest scent in the world.

Erin Swenson-Klatt is the Food and Handcraft Programs Coordinator at the American Swedish Institute, an avid home cook and baker, and a lover of Swedish-style breakfasts. Erin caught the fika bug while living in Stockholm as an exchange student, and returned to the U.S. eager to find sources for Swedish ingredients and to share the gospel of soft flatbreads, filmjölk and homemade juice with anyone who will listen. She also teaches wood fired baking courses at North House Folk School.
