About ASI / Instructors / David Susag

David Susag

I grew up near Hawley, MN, watching a Viking ship being built in an old potato warehouse, and it made me think about my Norwegian heritage. In 2000 I started taking folk art classes at Vesterheim in Decorah, IA. Since then, I have continued taking classes at North House Folk School, John C. Campbell Folk School, Milan Village Folk School, and the American Swedish Institute. In 2014, I had my first class turn on the spring pole lathe. I have continued taking more pole lathe classes, including traveling to the UK in 2024 to improve my spring pole skills. In 2024, I received my Gold medal in woodworking from Vesterheim.
