Tomte: the Gnome, the Myth, the Legend: ASI’s 74th Holiday Experience

Do you believe? We do. Meet this elusive figure or reintroduce yourself to a classic found in centuries-old folklore. Explore the world of Tomte, the mythical guardian of Scandinavian homesteads—and of course their home in the Turnblad Mansion! More than just a gnome, Tomte is known for their iconic red cap and long beard, but there’s much more to discover of Tomte through the ages.

Whether you’re a lifelong believer or discovering this mythical creature for the first time, prepare to be captivated by the charm and mystery of Tomte: the Gnome, the Myth, the Legend at ASI’s 74th annual Holiday Experience. 

Holiday Events

November-January program tickets are available to purchase now.

  • Julmarknad—find the perfect holiday gifts at one of the region’s largest handcraft markets with over 60 vendors, live music, festive foods, and activities for all ages. Preview night is on December 6, and the market is on December 7-8. 
  • Winter Solstice—celebrate with outdoor fires, glogg, and a reindeer sighting at the Twin Cities’ largest Winter Solstice Celebration. December 20.
  • Lutfisk Dinner—Do you think you have what it takes or were you born loving lutfisk like a true Swede? Traditionally served at Scandinavian American holiday tables, lutfisk is dried cod and served with other holiday sides. November 17.
  • Lucia Celebration Concert—Enjoy the magical performance by the Lucia Choir. December 15 at 1 pm & 3 pm.
  • November-January Programs—ASI offers a season of holiday craft workshops, cooking classes, food demos, and language classes to inspire new skills and create the perfect gifts.
  • Jul Shop—The ASI Museum Store’s Jul Shop, which opens around the same time as the exhibit, features a curated selection of handmade and imported items, with a special Member Appreciation Sale during the first opening week. Opens November 8.
  • FIKA Café—visit for a holiday menu featuring seasonal flavors, alongside their famous meatballs and specialty cookies.
