Wooden boats are fascinating objects—get just a taste of some of the traditional techniques needed to build them in this evening-long workshop. Students will have the opportunity to get hands on with specialty tools to make a small sample cross-section of a traditional Nordic wooden boat. With hand planes, students will cut bevels on their planks and shape a frame section. Students will also make their own tree nails—the wooden nails that held the planks to the frames—and assemble their samples with rivets and trees nails into a small cross section of traditional Nordic boat. No past woodworking experience needed; this class is perfect for anyone excited about wood, boats, history, or tools to try out something new.
