Milk Paint Basics

Looking for a finish with a long history and natural ingredients? Milk paint is a great choice! By mixing a smooth base from milk protein and lime with natural pigments, anyone can use this centuries-old technique to add durable color to woodenware, furniture, or even walls. However, there are a few tricks to using milk paint, which must be mixed from powder and finished properly to create a smooth and durable surface. Woodworker Maeve Gathje will lead students through a day of milk paint basics while they make their own sample tiles to use for future reference. This is a great class for DIYers, anyone interested in learning more about natural home finishes, and woodcarvers or furniture makers interested in adding color to their handmade items.

This class will cover basic techniques for mixing, applying, and finishing milk paint to achieve a desired look and feel, as well as some basic color theory for layering milk paint pigments to create interesting and unique color combinations. Students will head home with a set of small sample tiles useful for choosing future colors. A $40 materials fee covers all necessary tools and materials. Suitable for ages 16+.
