Embroidered Linen Sampler

Get started on a hand embroidered linen sampler inspired by Karin Larsson’s handwork! This class offers an overview of some basic free-hand embroidery stitches and gets students started on a linen sampler with circular motifs. In the morning, class will view several pieces in the ASI summer exhibition Karin Larsson: Let the Hand Be Seen. Students will then return to the classroom to prepare the sample linen with colorful circle patches. Then instructor Judy McDowell will review basic stitches, including the straight stitch, lazy daisy stitch, chain stitch, and French knots.

Like Karin, students will combine these basic stitches into a variety of delightful patterns to create a sampler with their own unique colors and designs. While students should not expect to finish the sampler in class, they will head home with everything they need and this is a perfect mobile project for summer stitching at home or on the move. The finished 12” x 16” sampler will work as a small pillow cover, table runner, or bag front. Suitable for both new and more experienced stitchers who want to practice with linen or focus on Karin’s designs, ages 16+.

A $20 materials fee covers all the necessary materials; students are invited to bring along any favorite hand sewing tools (especially a pair of sharp embroidery snips or scissors) and magnification (e.g. readers) if they need it.
