Cross Stitching Like Karin

“No one thinks you’re doing anything when you’re sitting with your handwork.”— Karin Larsson

Karin Larsson’s eye for design and talent for textiles may have been less heralded than her husband Carl’s paintings when she was alive, but ASI’s summer exhibition Karin Larsson: Let the Hand Be Seen allows visitors a deep dive into her words and work. In this one-day workshop, students will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition to see some inspirational pieces, and then choose from several prepared patterns by textile artist Laura Ricketts to practice laying out and starting a cross-stitch pattern inspired by Karin’s quotes and needlework. The finished design will be suitable for displaying in the embroidery hoop or on a flour sack towel as a contemporary take on Karin’s aesthetic.

During the workshop, participants can expect to have plenty of time to discuss Karin’s approach to textiles, learn how to create patterns from other sources of inspiration, and receive examples of good stitch technique.

Suitable for ages 16+ and all levels of experience; students provide their own materials. Click here to download the materials list. A $4 pattern fee payable to the instructor for the class patterns.
