SUMMARY:Preschool Program: Summer Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Families can explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and their favorite grownups\, this hands-on experience invites grownups and preschoolers to learn side by side through music\, movement\, creative play\, and seasonal activities. Inspired by Swedish preschools\, including forest schools where children spend most of their day outdoors\, this program embraces exploration and activities that build confidence and respect for nature. Participants will visit Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary with ASI educators and Garden Naturalists\, read stories\, sing songs\, and discover the Garden as it changes with the season. During the summer session\, children will learn about pollinators\, explore the trails on a guided sensory hike\, and experience the Garden’s colors\, sounds\, and textures. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary. An educator will meet participants at the entrance located close to the free parking lot. SUMMARY:Boreal Plant Walk in North Sámi and English with Dr. Áila O'Loughlin
DESCRIPTION:Where do Birch and Pine trees\, as well as blueberries and sweetgrass\, grow? Sápmi\, of course! (Yes\, and Minnesota!) Many plants in the boreal region grow in both the northernmost part of the Scandinavian Peninsula of Europe and around the Great Lakes region of North America. This Boreal Plant Walk sets out at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and takes a stroll through the woods\, stopping to learn a little about each plant that grows in both regions\, as well as the plant names in Northern Sámi. \nAdditional information:  \n\nAdvanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Advanced Carving Axe Skills with Paul Linden
DESCRIPTION:This class meets for 8 sessions on Wednesdays\, September 16-November 4\, from 6:30-9 pm each session. \n\nReady to take your axe skills to the next level? Whatever your focus\, the carving axe is a foundational tool for efficiently removing and shaping material in the green woodcarving tradition. This multi-week workshop invites woodworkers with previous carving axe experience to hone their craft in a collaborative setting over eight sessions. Sharpening and maintenance\, practical techniques\, efficient and sustainable axe practice will all be covered. This is the right class for carvers serious about building their skills and broadening their knowledge in service of their woodcarving practice. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis class meets for 8 sessions on Wednesdays\, September 16-November 4\, from 6:30-9 pm each session.\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $50 materials fee is payable to Paul Linden at the beginning of class and covers all materials for the entire course.\nStudents should bring their own carving axe\, but there will also be several different axes available to try during the course of the workshop.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nPhysical ability: Considerable hand strength and flexibility is required.\nSkill level: This class is suitable for students who already have green woodcarving experience\, such as taking several multi-day classes or previously carved spoons\, bowls\, or other green wood items and who are looking to increase their skills.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.

Participants will meet an ASI educator in the Silverwood parking lot and explore the park with ASI educators and Three Rivers Park District naturalists. Families will read stories\, sing songs\, and discover spiders\, spider webs\, and embroidery. Through Slöjd textile activities\, preschoolers explore the wonder of spider webs using natural materials while learning about craft\, creativity\, and the natural world\, with clear ties to Swedish tradition. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place rain or shine\, so participants should dress for the weather.\nAdult accompaniment and advance registration are required\, and one adult may attend per registered preschooler.\nFurther instructions will be emailed after registration.\nThe program may be canceled due to low registration\, so please register by Friday\, September 25 if you are interested.\nAdvanced registration required.
