SUMMARY:Binge-Style Knit Headband Workshop with Wendy Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Knit a headband with a traditional Bjärbo pattern in this afternoon-long workshop! Learn about the Binge (pronounced “Bing-ah”) tradition of knitting from Southwest Sweden’s Halland province. This style dates to the 1600s and is characterized by colorwork patterns and colors similar to Fair Isle\, and is often knit in a double-thickness fabric. In the workshop\, students will knit a wide ski headband using a traditional Bjärbo design motif from the Halland province. After a short presentation\, fiber artist Wendy Johnson will lead students through the steps of knitting the headband on circular needles. Students will need to complete their headband at home. The finished headband is perfect for keeping heads warm as the days get cold or to give as a gift! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $40 materials fee is due to the instructor in class. This covers three balls of Norwegian yarn in the traditional colorway and a knitting pattern.\nIf knitting this as a gift\, make sure to measure the gift recipient’s head in advance!\nStudents should bring a set of U.S. size 3 24-inch circular knitting needles. SUMMARY:Binding a Hardcover Book Workshop with Maeve Gathje
DESCRIPTION:This class meets Sat\, October 17 and Sun\, October 18\, 9 am-4 pm both days. \n\nA handmade hardcover book can record anything from journal entries to sketches\, recipes to guest remembrances. Get started with bookbinding while creating a hardcover book just the size and colors you need. This class focuses on a style of codex bookbinding (i.e.; folded pages attached to a binding) with a sewn text block\, resulting in a strong and firm set of pages inside a book cloth-wrapped hardcover. Working alongside instructor Maeve Gathje\, students will complete all the steps of binding at least one book\, and begin or even complete at least one more\, as well as leave with the skills and tools to continue binding books beyond the course. Throughout the class\, Maeve will address various tools\, alternative techniques\, design elements\, problem-solving strategies\, and questions about future adventures in bookbinding. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nAn $85 materials fee is due in class to the instructor and includes materials and tool use for at least two books.\nBooks need to be pressed overnight after binding\, and students have several options: they may provide their own book press (at least 8” x 14” and fits books up to 2” deep) or purchase one from the instructor for $45\, which allows them to take their books home on the last night of class. SUMMARY:Picture Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom Workshop with Kerstin Neumüller
DESCRIPTION:This course is online and will take place over two days\, Sat\, October 17 and Sun\, October 18 from 10 am-12 pm Central Time both sessions. \n\nJoin Swedish textile artist and educator Kerstin Neumüller for two online sessions focused on weaving a weft-facing repp band on a small rigid heddle-style band weaving loom. This type of weave uses the same tools as a warp-facing repp\, but a different technique. Instead of pulling the warp tight with the weft\, students will learn to give the weft more space and create a pattern that is built up as you weave\, much like drawing or picture. Kerstin will share various possible patterns\, giving students a starting place for designing their own band. This virtual class is an excellent option for students who have practiced band weaving on their own or in other classes with Kerstin. Students will work alongside Kerstin as she covers project options for small looms\, materials\, and tips for weft-faced weaving from her book Simple Weave. This versatile technique can also be used to create picture weavings on a frame loom for larger projects! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nStudents provide their own materials for this virtual class and should be comfortable warping their small rigid heddle loom ahead of class; please see the full materials list here.\nThis class has some homework between the two sessions.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: Suitable for students with past weaving experience. DESCRIPTION:Make a colorful and fluffy pumpkin house ready for imaginative play or display in this intergenerational class! Felter Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating their own pumpkin houses using the magical technique of needle felting. Each student will be able to add their own decorations or scene to a prepared base. The exhibition presents whimsical portraits of people in harmony with nature and invites moments of wonder\, curiosity\, and connection while exploring ideas of identity\, belonging\, and place. \nIn the exhibition\, ASI educators will guide caregivers and babies through each stop offering simple\, age-appropriate activities that encourage looking closely\, noticing details\, and responding together. Caregivers carry infants at eye level and leave strollers behind\, creating an up-close experience with each artwork that supports shared attention and early visual exploration. \nEach thirty-minute tour offers a unique experience. Because not every stop can be included\, the October tour may feature different works of art and different activities than the July tour\, giving returning visitors something new to discover. SUMMARY:Holiday Traditions Luminary Workshop with Sue Flanders
DESCRIPTION:Create a cherished family heirloom that will bring light and joy to the holiday season in this intro-level ceramics workshop! Starting with a porcelain pine tree shape\, students will create a variety of small holiday symbols to decorate the tree and paint it with colorful underglazes. Choose symbols that are special and significant to you\, such as a Tomte\, Lucia buns\, woven hearts\, mittens\, and other cozy holiday characters or objects. Students can use templates and molds to fully decorate their luminary\, emitting a cozy light in their home once finished. The luminaries will be fired and returned for pick up at ASI in mid-November. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $40 materials fee covers all materials\, including an LED light.\nAfter class\, the luminaries will be bisque-fired in the instructor’s studio\, glazed\, and fired for a final time. DESCRIPTION:Take a deep dive into the Lovikka knitting tradition\, known for its unique embroidered cuff embellishments! In this half day workshop\, students will explore the rich history of this renowned tradition originally from the town of Lovikka\, located near the Arctic Circle. After a short presentation\, fiber artist Wendy Johnson will lead students in the steps of how to knit the mitten on double-pointed needles\, embroider the cuffs\, and “full” (lightly felt) a miniature version of the Lovikka mitten. The mitten completed in class is a child’s size\, though the provided pattern includes an adult-sized mitten that you may complete at home. These embellished mittens are sure to keep you cozy in the cold season or provide the perfect seasonal gift! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $35 materials fee covers the pattern\, one skein of Lovikka yarn (enough for two mini-sized mittens)\, and embroidery yarn.\nStudents should bring a set of U.S. size 9 double-pointed needles (preferably in a set of 5)\, stitch markers with loop closure (or medium-sized safety pins)\, a small stitch holder\, and a tapestry needle.\n\n  \nPrerequisites \n\nSkill level: Intermediate knitters. A chef and IACP award-winning author\, Nichole has much to share about how contemporary Scandinavian cuisine offers a simple\, sustainable\, and satisfying approach to cooking and eating at home. In this book talk\, expect to hear about Nichole’s years of living in Denmark\, running Kantine restaurant in San Francisco\, and her journey to becoming a cookbook author\, as well as a few hints for favorite recipes from the book. \nAdditional information: \n\nA Q&A and opportunity for book signing will follow the discussion.\nGuests may also be interested in an opportunity to cook alongside Nichole in an intimate afternoon workshop.\nNichole Accettola is also the author of Scandinavian from Scratch: A Love Letter to the Baking of Denmark\, Norway and Sweden\, an IACP award winning cookbook.\nScandinavian from Scratch and Scandinavian Everyday are both available from the ASI Museum Store. SUMMARY:Craft and Cocktails Workshop: Ceramic Village Luminary with Kim Burnham
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the season by creating your own ceramic luminary in the style of a classic holiday village! This evening-long class invites students to create their own ceramic luminary to brighten the dark nights while enjoying a beverage from FIKA Café. Students will select a pre-shaped luminary (about 4″ tall) and focus on adding decorations through carved designs\, then select from multiple glaze options. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nTools and Materials: A $25 materials fee is paid to the instructor in class and covers all tools and materials. Kim will bring the luminaries back to her studio to fire them\, then return them to ASI for pick up a few weeks later.\nA beverage from FIKA Café is included in the class fee.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 21+.
