DESCRIPTION:You might know the popular Scandinavian game of kubb\, a stick-throwing\, block-knocking lawn game that originated during the Viking Age. But have you ever considered needing your own pocket-sized version to take wherever you go? In this workshop\, students will practice some basic knife skills to shape pine and birch blocks\, paint them in non-toxic milk paint\, and add decorative flourishes using chip carving techniques. The finished set is perfect for setting up on a table anywhere for a quick kubb match! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $20 materials fee is due in class to the instructor\, and covers all materials and tools.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nPhysical ability: Woodcarving requires good hand strength and dexterity\, for example being able to open a jam jar.\nSkill level: This workshop is open for all skill levels and especially appropriate for beginners.\nAges: Suitable for students ages 18+\, or ages 14-17 if registering alongside an accompanying adult. DESCRIPTION:Svenska Skolan meets weekly on 10 Saturdays from September 12–November 21. \n\nSvenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language and culture program for students aged 7-14 that offers an opportunity for children to learn or practice Swedish in a fun and interactive environment. Instruction is tailored to meet the needs of children at all levels of Swedish. Each week\, students sing\, play\, create and have fun på svenska. \nStudents are split into small groups for focused language time based on Swedish ability and age. We offer two parallel tracks—one entirely in Swedish for those students who speak Swedish at home and one for students new to or in the process of learning Swedish. The first track is language-focused with students receiving instruction entirely in Swedish while the second is culture-based with Swedish language lessons woven as relevant to the curriculum. Svenska Skolan meets for two hours per week with students receiving extra take-home activities for practice at home. Advanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Carve a Ceramic Pumpkin Luminary Workshop with Kim Burnham
DESCRIPTION:Pick your pumpkin from the patch and carve it into a permanent luminary as the days get darker! Ceramicist Kim Burnham of Imokim Pottery will provide each student with a hollow pumpkin form (about 6” tall) in the greenware stage\, ready to be customized. Inspired by their pumpkin’s unique shape\, students can add ridges\, a face\, or other carved designs that will be highlighted by a glowing candle. Finally\, students choose a glaze color. After class\, the projects will be dried and fired before returning to ASI for pick up. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nTools and Materials: A $35 materials fee is due to the instructor in class; this covers all materials and tools as well as the kiln firing. Learn the basics of glass design\, such as cutting and fusing in a kiln. Choose from a wide selection of decorative accessory glass—including crushed glass frit\, stringer\, noodles\, and mosaic glass pieces to adorn a clear glass base. Students will have the option to use either clear glass or transparent colors for the night light base. After class\, your glass projects will be fused in the instructor’s studio kiln and mounted onto night light bases. The finished pieces will be returned to ASI for pick up a few weeks later. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk featuring Sámi author and journalist Elin Anna Labba in conversation with Minnesota based North Sámi language educator\, Dr. Áila O’Loughlin. Drawing on her own family’s history of forced relocation and violent colonial dispossession\, Anna Labba’s debut novel\, The Home of the Drowned\, brings Sámi history to the fore through this intimate story. \n\nMake it a night out—the Turnblad Mansion with Eyes as Big as Plates on view\, FIKA Café\, and the ASI Museum Store will be open until 8 pm on 9/17! Books will be available for purchase at the event in collaboration with event partner\, University of Minnesota Press. \n\nAbout the Book:\n\nThe haunting\, multigenerational saga of a family of Sámi women fighting the devastation of their way of life. Nothing is true\, and everything is true; poetry will never hurt more than what has happened. Every summer\, Iŋgá\, her mother Rávdná\, and her Aunt Ánne travel west to their village on the lake. But the summer Iŋgá is thirteen\, they arrive to find their home and possessions have disappeared under water\, the land flooded by a dam built to supply hydropower to a society that has continually stolen from them. \n\n\nThe Home of the Drowned follows these women’s fortunes over forty years— from 1942 to 1982—as the water their people have lived near for centuries is transformed into a menacing force that threatens all they hold dear. Defying the authorities\, Rávdná decides to build a proper house on the lake to replace what was lost\, becoming an unlikely activist even as her actions isolate her family from the rest of the community. Meanwhile\, Ánne’s health is in decline\, and a concerned Iŋgá merely longs to live like everyone else—an impossible wish when the Swedish state is relentlessly drowning her world. \n\n\nDrawing on her own family’s history of forced relocation and violent colonial dispossession\, Elin Anna Labba’s debut novel brings Sámi history to the fore through this intimate story. In poetic prose deftly translated by Elizabeth Clark Wessel\, she reveals connections between land\, water\, and people that hauntingly reverberate with the question: what is it that makes a home? \n\nAbout the presenters:\n\nElin Anna Labba is a Sámi journalist and author from the arctic region of Sweden. Her first book\, The Rocks Will Echo Our Sorrow: The Forced Displacement of the Northern Sámi\, also published in translation by the University of Minnesota Press\, won the 2020 August Prize for Best Nonfiction in Sweden. The Swedish publication of The Home of the Drowned was awarded the Norrland Literature Prize in 2025. \n\n\nDr. Áila O’Loughlin is a Sámi-American philosophy professor at North Hennepin Community College and a former high school English teacher of ten years. Students will work from a photo reference to create a three-layer monochromatic value study and then a full color painting in a four-value\, hold-the-white approach to transparent watercolor. Students will build confidence as they explore split-primary color mixing\, wet-into-wet mingling\, transparent layering\, intentional edges\, and lively brushwork with playful warm up exercises\, expert support\, and individualized feedback. DESCRIPTION:Go big and bold with floral design while tackling a statement floral arrangement! In this workshop with florist-farmer Elle Sullivan of Mellifera Flowers\, students will practice techniques for achieving sculptural designs using florist mechanics and specialty ingredients. Each student will take cues from color theory to craft nuanced and expressive palettes\, work with larger vases (more flowers!) to try out dramatic arrangement styles and shapes\, and lean on instructor Elle for individual guidance for trying out new design techniques. Using a provided vase and reusable floral mechanics\, students will select their ingredients from Mellifera’s farm fresh “flower buffet\,” featuring September’s best blooms\, such as dahlias\, zinnias\, and eucalyptus. SUMMARY:Intro to Leksand-style Embroidery Workshop with Kirsi Manni
DESCRIPTION:Try out Leksand style embroidery with visiting artist Kirsi Manni\, a textile expert and teacher visiting from Dalarna\, Sweden! In this one-day introductory-level class\, students will practice some basics embroidery and applique techniques to create a small sampler that can be put to use as a pin cushion\, needle case front\, or other project. Students will also make their own colorful pom-pom or tuppa\, typical of Leksand-style folk dress. While they work\, students will have a chance to hear from Kirsi about her experience working with textiles in Sweden\, as well as view examples of historic needlework from ASI’s material collection and Kirsi’s personal collection. \nKirsi Manni is the owner of Art&Craft Sweden and lives in Siljanäs\, Dalarna. Over one week this fall\, Kirsi will bring her expertise in Leksand style folk dress to ASI. Kirsi is also offering a more intensive needlework project workshop and a talk about her personal experience with folk costume traditions. \n\nAdditional information:\n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $15 materials fee is included in the class fee and includes all necessary materials.\nStudents are encouraged to bring a small sewing kit with their favorite hand sewing tools\, including a pair of fabric shears and small thread scissors\, assorted needles and pins\, and a thimble if they use one. This gathering aims to bring people together\, foster new friendships\, and strengthen connections within the local Nordic community. \nHosted by Karvel Schram\, an Icelandic native and former resident of Denmark\, along with a group of friends\, the event was created to connect people from across all the Nordic countries\, celebrate shared heritage\, and learn from one another’s unique traditions and experiences. Gathering will also help engage younger generations who may not yet be actively involved in Nordic organizations and create an accessible entry point into the broader community in the Twin Cities. \nEnjoy music\, the lawn game Kubb\, and conversation in a relaxed setting in ASI’s courtyard. While anyone age 21 and older is welcome\, the event is primarily focused on building community among adults in their mid-20s to mid-30s. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Living Folk Costume Traditions Lecture with Kirsi Manni
DESCRIPTION:Join Kirsi Manni\, a textile artist\, historian\, and educator for a discussion about the living tradition of folk costumes around her home in Dalarna\, Sweden. Kirsi will share her story of moving to Siljasnäs\, Dalarna and becoming involved in the folk dancing and costume community\, before ultimately finding a role in documenting\, preserving\, and now passing on traditional weaving and textile techniques at risk of extinction. \nKirsi Manni is the owner of Art&Craft Sweden and lives in Siljansäs\, Dalarna. Over one week this fall\, Kirsi will bring her expertise in Leksand style folk dress to ASI. Kirsi is also offering an introductory embroidery workshop and more intensive needlework project workshop. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration encouraged\, tickets at the door if available.\nThis program is using a Pay-what-you-can tickets pricing model.
