DESCRIPTION:Experience the surreal photography of Finnish-Norwegian artists Riitta Ilkonen and Karoline Hjorth in the new exhibition Eyes as Big as Plates with an infant. Caregivers and babies up to 18 months connect with this exhibition\, which showcases humans in harmony with nature through whimsical portraits that explore who we are and where we belong. ASI educators guide caregivers and babies through each stop\, offering fun\, age-appropriate activities that foster connection with the art and with each other. Caregivers leave strollers behind and carry infants to engage with the portraits at eye level\, supporting early visual learning and developmental growth. The tour builds curiosity\, interpretation\, and imagination through purposeful observation. \nAdditional information:  \n\nThe program includes a 30-minute guided tour\, followed by 15 minutes of sensory play in the Castle before it opens to the public.\nMuseum admission is included\, allowing participants to explore the exhibition\, the Turnblad Mansion\, the Family Gallery\, and ASI’s outdoor\, fenced-in spaces.\nAdvanced registration required.

SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] Introduction to Nordic Woven Bands Workshop with Caroline Feyling
DESCRIPTION:This program is sold out. To be added to the waitlist\, please call 612-871-4907.  \n\nDive into the beautiful yet utilitarian world of band weaving with Scandinavian weaver\, textile artist\, and craft instructor\, Caroline Feyling. Handwoven bands can be so much more than trim or decoration. Bands woven on the band heddle date back hundreds of years in Scandinavia. Historically they were used for everything from hair ties to rope\, and even horse reins! In this one day intensive\, students will learn to backstrap weave plain weave bands on a band heddle loom. Each student will weave a short sample band along with a longer band between 36-72″ long. By the end of this class\, students will be able to design\, set up\, and weave plain weave bands independently. This portable and beginner friendly technique is an excellent first foray into the world of weaving. \nTools and Materials: \n\nA $30 materials fee covers materials for two bands. All tools and materials will be provided with the option to purchase the tools from the instructor at the end of the class.\nOptionally\, bring magnification (i.e.\, readers)\, a cushion to sit on\, and a document holder or pattern holder for easy pattern reading.\n\n  \nAdditional information:  \n\nSkill Level: Especially recommended for beginners. Students may also be interested in continuing building their band weaving skills over the weekend in the Pick Up style band weaving workshop.\nAges: Suitable for ages 14+. James Savage (The Local Sweden) is joining Andrew Hazzard and Shubhanjana Das (Sahan Journal) in a panel discussion to their experiences working for mission-driven newsrooms covering stories for and about immigrants in Sweden and Minnesota. \nModerated by Fred de Sam Lazaro (Under-Told Stories\, PBS NewsHour)\, the conversation will explore contemporary immigration issues in Sweden and Minnesota and their recent historical context through the lens of journalism\, illuminating how coverage differs in each country and what we can learn from each other. Additionally\, event attendees will hear firsthand about what it’s like being a journalist in each country and working for a newsroom with a specific purpose: to provide essential information for immigrant communities. \nPANELISTS: \nJames Savage is Founder and Publishing Director of The Local\, the biggest source of local news and advice for international professionals/expats in nine European countries. His focus is on building reader revenues and making news sustainable in the 21st century for the benefit of diverse audiences across Europe. He writes about Swedish and European affairs for The Local and is a frequent commentator in Swedish media on British and Swedish affairs. He is chair of the Swedish Magazine Publishers’ Association (Sveriges tidskrifter) and chair of Utgivarna\, which gathers all major Swedish media companies to speak on areas of common interest and promote free speech. He won Sveriges Tidskrifter’s Grand Prize in 2021 for his contributions to the Swedish media industry. James lives in Stockholm and is originally from Lincolnshire\, England. \nAndrew Hazzard is a reporter with Sahan Journal who focuses on climate change and environmental justice issues. After starting his career in daily newspapers in Mississippi and North Dakota\, Andrew returned to Minneapolis where he worked for local publications such as Southwest Journal. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists. Andrew enjoys travel\, speaks Spanish\, and is a depressed supporter of Minnesota’s professional sports teams. He and his wife live in Minneapolis. \nShubhanjana Das is a reporter at Sahan Journal. She is a journalist from India and previously worked as a reporting fellow at Sahan before stepping into her current role. Before moving to the U.S.\, she spent five years working as an independent journalist in India\, writing for outlets including VICE\, Vogue\, The Indian Express\, and Mongabay. She is a 2026 National Press Foundation fellow and graduated from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2025. \nMODERATOR: \nFred de Sam Lazaro is the founder and executive director of the Under-Told StoriesProject and has served as a correspondent for the PBS NewsHour\, since 1985. He also was a regular contributor and substitute anchor for PBS’ Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. Fred also has directed films from India and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the acclaimed documentary series\, Wide Angle. DESCRIPTION:Spring term of Svenska Skolan meets for nine weeks from March 21–May 30\, 2026 (no class April 4th or May 23rd). \nSvenska Skolan is a Saturday morning language and culture program for students aged 7–14 that offers an opportunity for children to learn or practice Swedish in a fun and interactive environment. Instruction is tailored to meet the needs of children at all levels of Swedish. Each week\, students sing\, play\, create and have fun på svenska. Students are split into small groups for focused language time based on Swedish ability and age. We offer two parallel tracks—one entirely in Swedish for those students who speak Swedish at home\, and one for students new to or in the process of learning Swedish. The first track is language-focused with students receiving instruction entirely in Swedish while the second is culture-based with Swedish language lessons woven as relevant to the curriculum. Svenska Skolan meets for two hours per week with students receiving extra take-home activities for practice at home. Advanced registration is required. Please note that the spring term meets for 9 weeks\, with no class on April 4th (Easter) or May 23rd (Memorial Day).
