ASI Announces 74th Holiday Experience—Tomte: The Gnome, The Myth, The Legend

All things gnome this year at the American Swedish Institute's cherished annual holiday experience
August 15, 2024 By Darby Johnson

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—August 15, 2024—The American Swedish Institute museum and cultural center is thrilled to announce its 74th annual holiday experience, on view from November 9–January 26. This festive season, ASI invites guests to enjoy Nordic-inspired holiday programs, explore the annual holiday exhibition in the historic Turnblad Mansion, indulge in specialty food experiences, and shop at the ASI Jul store and one of the region’s largest holiday handcraft markets.

Journey through history with ASI’s newest exhibition, following the fascinating evolution of tomte. Despite its iconic figure, the multicultural origins of this cultural icon are often overlooked. This year, guests will explore the folklore and influences of the gnome—from a saint to the Christmas goat and helpful tomte to the grouchy gårdstomte (garden gnome).

“We’re bringing the enchanting world of tomte to life this holiday season,” said Britta Walstrom, Program Manager at the American Swedish Institute. “Our guests are in for a truly memorable experience.”

“This year’s holiday experience at the American Swedish Institute is great fun—holiday joy, tradition, and community. You’ll love exploring the legend behind the beloved Tomte,” adds Molly Wright Steenson, president and CEO at ASI. “The holiday season at ASI is always a highlight, and this year is no exception—join us as we celebrate and create new holiday memories together!”
