SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Chip Carved Ornaments with Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Expand your carving skills in this three-session chip carving workshop led by woodcarvers Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes. \nThis class takes place over three Wednesday evenings\, 6-8:30 pm on December 2\, 9\, and 16.\n  \nExplore the technique of chip carving in the Scandinavian style. Chip carving is an old and useful form of decoration for woodenware of all kinds\, including bowls\, plates\, spoons\, and decorative boxes or signs. It is also perfect for making a beautiful and unique heirloom ornament. In this three-session workshop\, students will work alongside woodcarvers Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes to learn basic chip carving techniques and then decorate a small wooden ornament. Basic chip carving techniques\, such as tool options and care\, wood and pattern selection\, and finishing projects\, will also be covered as time allows. Students will leave with the skills to practice chip carving more at home\, along with an ornament perfect for displaying on a Christmas tree or giving as a special gift. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $15 materials fee is due to the instructors in class. Students are invited provide their own chip carving knife (suggested style: Pfeil Swiss chip carving knife #2) and bring a leather strop for sharpening in class if they have them; the instructors also have tools to lend.\n\n  \nPrerequisites \n\nPhysical ability: Please note\, carving requires some hand strength and flexibility.\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.

Bring your nyckelharpa\, hardingfele\, fiddle\, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This jam is open to musicians of all levels who want to learn and play Nordic folk music. Bring your friends or plan to make new ones here! \nMinnesota has long been known for its rich music scenes—in part due to the many immigrant diasporas that have established themselves in the area. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots festival\, to the countless house jams across the state\, Nordic folk music is an important part of Minnesota’s musical identity. Whether you’re a master fiddler or want to learn more about folk music\, this monthly gathering is for you! \nThis jam is facilitated by ASI staff\, but tunes are selected each time by musicians in the room. We will play standards and originals inspired by the folk traditions of Sweden\, Norway\, Finland\, Denmark\, and Iceland. While many musicians may bring traditional instruments\, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to participate. If you do not play an instrument\, you can still attend if you respectfully observe and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required—see you there! No advanced registration required.

Join potter Kim Burnham to carve and paint a ceramic ornament. \nJoin potter Kim Burnham of ImoKim Pottery to try out decorating a ceramic ornament with the sgrafitto technique while enjoying a beverage from FIKA Café! Students will learn the basics of adding a design to ceramics by carving and painting on a round 3.5″ greenware ornament base. Use a template provided by the instructor or bring ideas for your own design! The ornaments will be glazed with a top clear coat and then fired before returning to ASI for pick up a few weeks after class. DESCRIPTION:Share Swedish art and culture with your baby during a morning of exploration at the Turnblad Mansion. \nCaregivers and infants up to 18 months are invited to experience ASI’s annual holiday experience\, Remember When\, in the historic Turnblad Mansion. During this special tour\, babies and their caregivers explore festive displays\, discover stories from the past\, and engage with the sights\, sounds\, and details of the holiday season together. Through close looking\, shared attention\, and simple activities\, families build meaningful connections with art\, history\, and each other. \nASI educator Jason Leuthold guides caregivers and babies through each stop\, offering age-appropriate activities that encourage curiosity\, exploration\, and engagement. Caregivers carry infants at eye level\, allowing babies to experience artwork and installations up close while supporting early visual exploration and shared discovery. Each 30-minute tour offers a unique experience and concludes with 15 minutes of sensory play in the Castle before it opens to the public at 10 am. \nAdditional Information: \n\nAdmission is included with registration\, allowing participants to explore the current exhibition and Family Gallery after the program.\nAdvanced registration is required. Please register by the Friday before the program. During this special tour\, babies and their caregivers explore festive displays\, discover stories from the past\, and engage with the sights\, sounds\, and details of the holiday season together. Through close looking\, shared attention\, and simple activities\, families build meaningful connections with art\, history\, and each other. \nASI educator Jason Leuthold guides caregivers and babies through each stop\, offering age-appropriate activities that encourage curiosity\, exploration\, and engagement. Caregivers carry infants at eye level\, allowing babies to experience artwork and installations up close while supporting early visual exploration and shared discovery. Each 30-minute tour offers a unique experience and concludes with 15 minutes of sensory play in the Castle before it opens to the public at 10 am. \nAdditional Information: \n\nAdmission is included with registration\, allowing participants to explore the current exhibition and Family Gallery after the program.\nAdvanced registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Students in grades K-2 are invited to explore Nordic handcraft in the monthly Starting with Slöjd program. This month’s focus is making Swedish holiday decorations with straw. \nStarting with Slöjd is a monthly program for early elementary students. Participants explore new tools\, materials\, and skills that prepare them for a lifelong love of handcraft. Learn to work with straw like the Swedes do around the holidays! \nAnna Ruhland will teach students how to make star-shaped straw ornaments based on Swedish traditions. Students can use straw or compostable straws to create their ornaments. These projects make for great handmade holiday gifts! \nAdditional information: \n\nThese are drop-off programs. Adults may not accompany children during this program.\nSuitable for students who are currently in Kindergarten through 2nd grade (ages 6-8).
