Maeve Gathje is an artist, craftsperson, and educator from Rochester, Minnesota. A third-generation woodworker, Maeve focuses on Material Intelligence and storytelling in her work with wood, stone, and other traditional materials. She was first introduced to Scandinavian handcraft by Harley Refsal at Luther College in 2013. After completing the craft education intern program at North House Folk School in 2016, Maeve moved on to attain her Masters in Fine Arts from Montana State University in 2020. Her culminating thesis work focused on pedagogy, how people are taught, how they learn, and how community can grow around those practices. Teaching is her passion. Maeve is an educator at multiple institutions throughout the midwest including North House Folk School, the American Swedish Institute, and the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum. When she is not teaching, Maeve is a full time sculptor and craftsperson. She has worked on multiple permanent installations in stone and cut tile throughout Minnesota. Her work has been shown in galleries across the country.
Her work can be found on her website or her Instagram!
