He is also an Associate Professor at the Copenhagen Business School. His research and teaching focus on comparing U.S. and Nordic approaches to sustainable business and examining American and Nordic varieties of capitalism with the aim of contributing to realizing sustainable capitalism. Robert teaches the suite of courses “Sustainable Capitalism in the Nordics?” which leverage his book Nordic Capitalism: Lessons for Realizing Sustainability Capitalism (Cambridge University Press\, 2026)\, available to read open access (free) at https://bit.ly/3MSvrOp. \nBefore joining Berkeley Haas in 2014\, Robert was an Assistant Professor at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark\, following a decade in Corporate America\, where he held various roles in manufacturing\, supply chain\, marketing\, strategy\, and investor relations at IBM and Boston Scientific. He holds a Ph.D. in corporate social responsibility from the Copenhagen Business School\, an MBA in international business from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management\, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to Norway hosted at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). \nWith his wife\, Sarah\, he is the proud parent of two wonderful children\, Jonas and Mikkel. He values a good sense of humor and kindness above all else\, and when that obituary is eventually written\, Robert hopes those qualities could potentially be said about him.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Thursday of every month for Open Nordic Jam! \n\nHave you ever wanted to play music in the historic Turnblad Mansion? Now’s your chance! Bring your nyckelharpa\, hardingfele\, fiddle\, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This jam is open to musicians of all levels who want to learn and play Nordic folk music. Bring your friends or plan to make new ones here! \nMinnesota has long been known for its rich music scenes—in part due to the many immigrant diasporas that have established themselves in the area. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots festival\, to the countless house jams across the state\, Nordic folk music is an important part of Minnesota’s musical identity. Whether you’re a master fiddler or want to learn more about folk music\, this monthly gathering is for you! \nThis jam is facilitated by ASI staff\, but tunes are selected each time by musicians in the room. We will play standards and originals inspired by the folk traditions of Sweden\, Norway\, Finland\, Denmark\, and Iceland. While many musicians may bring traditional instruments\, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to participate. If you do not play an instrument\, you can still attend if you respectfully observe and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required—see you there! No advanced registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Families can explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and their favorite grownups\, this hands-on experience invites grownups and preschoolers to learn side by side through music\, movement\, creative play\, and seasonal activities. Inspired by Swedish preschools\, including forest schools where children spend most of their day outdoors\, this program embraces exploration and activities that build confidence and respect for nature. Participants will visit Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary with ASI educators and Garden Naturalists\, read stories\, sing songs\, and discover the Garden as it changes with the season. During the summer session\, children will learn about pollinators\, explore the trails on a guided sensory hike\, and experience the Garden’s colors\, sounds\, and textures. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary. An educator will meet participants at the entrance located close to the free parking lot. In this course\, students will use only a knife to carve a Nordic-inspired character in this introduction to the simplified world of flat-plane carving. This experience is open to new carvers and carvers with more experience. Get introduced to the history\, past\, and present carvers\, many figure carving options\, necessary cuts\, and finishing techniques\, culminating in a finished carving or two. \nAdditional information: \n\nMaterials and tools: Students pay a $10 materials fee per figure carving blank (a piece of wood ready to carve) and are welcome to bring their own tools or use a set provided by ASI.\nPhysical ability: This course requires a modest amount of dexterity and hand strength. They explore the meaning of runestones\, learn about daily life in the Viking Age\, and participate in a spirited “raid” of the Castle. Each activity encourages curiosity\, creativity\, and problem-solving. \nWhether your camper is discovering Vikings for the first time or already considering themselves an expert\, Viking Camp is a fun day of discovery they’ll remember forever. DESCRIPTION:Where do Birch and Pine trees\, as well as blueberries and sweetgrass\, grow? Sápmi\, of course! (Yes\, and Minnesota!) Many plants in the boreal region grow in both the northernmost part of the Scandinavian Peninsula of Europe and around the Great Lakes region of North America. To be added to the waitlist\, please call 612-871-4907.  \n\nLearn about the rich\, storied history of Swedish flax growing and linen processing from ancient times to today\, and discover the steps involved in growing\, harvesting\, and processing flax fiber for making linen. Linen enthusiast Wendy Johnson has experimented with growing and processing flax locally and is here to spin tales connecting this old Swedish industry through its history with Swedish immigrants in the US to opportunities to learn from this fiber today. After a short lecture\, students will have hands-on experience processing flax stalks into spinnable fibers using traditional hand tools. \nAdditional information: \n\nA $30 materials fee covers all materials and tools; students will process approximately one pound of flax each and can take the finished fibers home. We suggest wearing clothes that can get a little messy and bring a pair of gardening gloves.\nPhysical ability: To fully participate in using the processing tools\, note that students need some manual dexterity in hands and arms\, however the class will still be of interest to most students even without hands on participation.\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.\nAdvanced registration required.
