Try out nålbinding, an old textile tradition that has roots around the world but has been especially well preserved in Scandinavia! Sometimes called “Viking knitting,” nålbinding uses only a simple needle and short strands of yarn to create a fabric. In Scandinavia, this nålbinding was used to create sturdy socks, mittens, and hats, but this looping technique also arose in other places independently and was used for everything from garments to fishing nets. In this short intro class, students will make their own nålbinding needle, learn a little about the history of nålbinding, and practice some basic stitches to start a bracelet or armband. You’ll leave with everything you need to continue this craft at home! This is an excellent workshop for anyone looking to explore the cross over of toolmaking, textiles, and ancient history.
