SUMMARY:Babies at the Castle
DESCRIPTION:Share Swedish art and culture with your baby during a morning of exploration at the Turnblad Mansion. \nCaregivers and infants up to 18 months are invited to experience ASI’s annual holiday experience\, Remember When\, in the historic Turnblad Mansion. During this special tour\, babies and their caregivers explore festive displays\, discover stories from the past\, and engage with the sights\, sounds\, and details of the holiday season together. Through close looking\, shared attention\, and simple activities\, families build meaningful connections with art\, history\, and each other. \nASI educator Jason Leuthold guides caregivers and babies through each stop\, offering age-appropriate activities that encourage curiosity\, exploration\, and engagement. Caregivers carry infants at eye level\, allowing babies to experience artwork and installations up close while supporting early visual exploration and shared discovery. Each 30-minute tour offers a unique experience and concludes with 15 minutes of sensory play in the Castle before it opens to the public at 10 am. \nAdditional Information: \n\nAdmission is included with registration\, allowing participants to explore the current exhibition and the Benson Family Gallery after the program.\nAdvanced registration is required.\nPlease register by the Friday before the program. ASI may cancel the program if registration is low.\nStrollers are not permitted in exhibition spaces.\nASI educators encourage caregivers to carry infants so babies can view artwork and installations at eye level.\nFood\, beverages\, and chewing gum are not permitted in exhibition spaces.

SUMMARY:Preschool Program: Needle felted pepparkakor with Jen Newburg
DESCRIPTION:ASI’s Preschool Program creates opportunities for families to experience Swedish art\, culture\, and traditions together. Join us in November to explore the art of needle felting with felter Jen Newburg. \nPreschoolers and their favorite grown-ups explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and one accompanying adult\, this intergenerational\, hands-on experience encourages families to learn side by side through mansion exploration\, creative play\, circle time\, and slöjd (handcraft). \nThis November\, preschoolers will prepare for the Jul season by creating needle felted pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies). Children can use their finished creation for imaginative play or hang it as a festive tree ornament. Along the way\, families will discover Jul traditions through hands-on activities that engage all five senses. Teaching artist Jen Newburg will introduce preschoolers to the art of needle felting as they gently interlock wool fibers to create their ornaments. This beginner-friendly project provides a fun\, age-appropriate introduction to slöjd while building creativity\, confidence\, and fine motor skills. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis program takes place in Paulson Hall\, located on the lower level of the Turnblad mansion.\nPlease arrive 15 minutes before the program begins to allow time for check-in.\nCheck in at the front desk upon arrival. A Visitor Service Associate will direct participants to Paulson Hall.\nIf you arrive before the front doors open\, use the buzzer by the blue wall to gain access.\nRegistration includes admission for one preschooler and one adult.\nThe program limits attendance to one adult per registered preschooler.\nAdult accompaniment and advance registration are required.\nMuseum admission is included with program registration.\nFood and beverages are not permitted during the program to keep the wool clean.\nPlease review ASI’s cancellation policy before registering.\nPhoto credit: Jen Newburg

SUMMARY:November Open Nordic Jam
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Thursday of every month for Open Nordic Jam! \n\nHave you ever wanted to play music in the historic Turnblad Mansion? Now’s your chance! Bring your nyckelharpa\, hardingfele\, fiddle\, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This jam is open to musicians of all levels who want to learn and play Nordic folk music. Bring your friends or plan to make new ones here! \nMinnesota has long been known for its rich music scenes—in part due to the many immigrant diasporas that have established themselves in the area. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots festival\, to the countless house jams across the state\, Nordic folk music is an important part of Minnesota’s musical identity. Whether you’re a master fiddler or want to learn more about folk music\, this monthly gathering is for you! \nThis jam is facilitated by ASI staff\, but tunes are selected each time by musicians in the room. We will play standards and originals inspired by the folk traditions of Sweden\, Norway\, Finland\, Denmark\, and Iceland. While many musicians may bring traditional instruments\, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to participate. If you do not play an instrument\, you can still attend if you respectfully observe and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required—see you there! No advanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Exhibit G Book Talk with Fady Joudah
DESCRIPTION:Join a reading and conversation with award-winning poet and translator Fady Joudah\, presented by Milkweed Editions and Mizna. \n\nNote: This event is accessible and will include an ASL interpreter. \n\n\n\n\nAbout EXHIBIT G: Fady Joudah writes from the split perspective of a Palestinian American physician caring for the sick while watching the destruction of Gaza from the United States\, a nation complicit in that destruction. He locates the paradox of his position everywhere: in the seed a sparrow eats from his proffered hand; in his writing in English\, the oppressor’s language; in the faces of Palestinian children receiving meals from aid kitchens—a glimpse into what his life could have been\, and what is being lost in a war disproportionately impacting children and their families. Throughout the book\, beauty insists on its survival not only through the Palestinian people\, but also through the nonhuman world in which he takes occasional refuge from the devastation that humanity brings upon itself. \n\nAbout the author: Fady Joudah is the author of […]\, a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize\, and Exhibit G. His other poetic works include: The Earth in the Attic; Alight; Textu\, a book-long sequence of short poems whose meter is based on cellphone character count; Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance; and Tethered to Stars. He has translated several collections of poetry from the Arabic and is the co-editor and co-founder of the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize. He was a winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition and has received the Jackson Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Banipal/Times Literary Supplement prize from the UK\, the Griffin Poetry Prize\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and the Arab American Book Award. He lives in Houston\, with his wife and kids\, where he practices internal medicine.

SUMMARY:Drawing and Carving Acanthus with Jock Holmen
DESCRIPTION:This class runs Wednesdays\, October 21-November 18\, 6-9 pm each session. \n\nNorwegian-style acanthus carvings are familiar to many appreciators of traditional Norwegian buildings\, wooden ware\, and other folk art—but before you can carve it\, you have to be able to draw it!
