SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Start Carving Tiny Folk with Maeve Gathje
DESCRIPTION:Join carving instructor Maeve Gathje in a full-day workshop focused on honing carving skills to carve sculpted figures. \nJump into the world of Scandinavian-style flat plane carving in this one-day class\, focused on carving “tiny folk” or small characters. Maeve Gathje will get students started with the technique of carving faces and people “on the corner” of a rectangular block. This simple format is easy to get started with and still offers lots of great practice for new carvers to practice knife skills and exercise their creativity. In the morning\, students will start on their two 1″ x 1″ x 3″ figures\, about the size of a standard chess piece\, with a focus on the cuts that define faces. In the afternoon\, students will paint their characters using milk paint. Throughout the day\, tool and material selection\, knife safety techniques\, and finishing options will all be discussed. DESCRIPTION:Learn from felting instructor Judy McDowell to create felted wool luminaries in this hands-on 5-hour workshop. \nCelebrate the return of light after the Winter Solstice by creating felted wool luminaries\, which bring a cozy glow even after the holiday season. Using traditional wet felting techniques\, students will work alongside felting instructor Judy McDowell to lay out wool in thin layers around a pattern\, add soapy water\, and roll\, rub\, and manipulate the wool into a perfect light-weight woolen globe that can be lit from within with a candle or string lights. Students can expect to leave the class with one to two finished luminaries\, depending on size. \nTools and Materials: \n\nA materials fee of about $20-$30 is payable to the instructor\, depending on the size of the projects chosen.\nStudents are also encouraged to bring 2-3 old bath towels\, a bag to take home wet projects in\, and an apron.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nPhysical ability: This workshop requires hand strength and some extended standing.\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 16+. This hands-on program introduces children and their grown-ups to the legend of Sankta Lucia through stories\, music\, and crafts. \nTogether\, preschoolers and their important grown-ups discover the traditions behind Lucia Day by exploring questions like\, “What do Swedish families do on Lucia Day?” and “Why do they do it?” Preschoolers will go home with their own Lucia Crown or Star Boy wand\, recipes\, and ideas for creating their own Lucia celebration at home. Visit the trolls in the holiday exhibition\, then join Carole Jean Anderson and Patrice Johnson for this evening demonstration featuring some favorite recipes from the Jolly Troll menus. Carole Jean will share memories (and maybe a few songs) from her life in the Jolly Troll restaurant family\, and Patrice will cook up an assortment of holiday treats\, from cranberry fluff to meatballs to rice pudding. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis class includes a light meal.
