DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special\, puppet-filled edition of Kids at the Castle featuring Seth Eberle. \nSeth Eberle returns to ASI with Dream of Owls\, an imaginative puppet performance that helps families explore fear\, curiosity\, and the power of learning. From the creative mind behind The Box King and With Stars Above\, Seth brings his engaging storytelling and handcrafted puppetry to two special November mornings. \nIn Dream of Owls\, little Theo drifts off to sleep and becomes frightened by a mysterious hooting sound. With guidance from his father and a strangely familiar dream dragon\, Theo learns to face his fears by discovering the source of the sound: an owl. Through creativity\, curiosity\, and knowledge\, Theo discovers that understanding the unknown can transform fear into wonder. Families will enjoy a magical puppet experience featuring table-top\, hand\, and rod puppets as well as an imaginative dream world brought to life through changing sets and colorful transformations. Developed with professional naturalists and environmental educators from Silverwood Park and the Minnesota Zoo\, Dream of Owls combines accurate science with engaging storytelling for family audiences. \nAbout Seth Eberle: Minneapolis-based puppet artist Seth Eberle creates contemporary puppet performances that inspire family audiences through storytelling\, art\, and exploration. Seth combines puppetry with environmental education as a teaching artist at Silverwood Park and through partnerships with local schools. His work has been supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board and recognized throughout the regional arts community. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis is a special edition of Kids at the Castle.\nThe performance takes place in Larson Hall on the second floor of the Nelson Cultural Center.\nDoors open at 8:40 am for check-in and seating. The program begins promptly at 9 am.\nAdult accompaniment is required. This is not a drop-off program.\nMuseum admission is included with registration.\nFamilies are encouraged to explore ASI after the performance.\nFood and beverages are allowed in Larson Hall.\nPlease register by the Friday before the scheduled program. ASI may cancel the program due to low registration. SUMMARY:Advanced Band Weaving Workshop with Kerstin Neumüller
DESCRIPTION:This course takes place online over two days\, Sat\, Nov 21\, and Sun\, Nov 22\, from 10 am-12 pm CST both sessions. \n\nJoin Swedish textile artist and educator Kerstin Neumüller for two online sessions focused on more advanced techniques on a small rigid heddle-style band weaving loom. Suitable for students who have previously practiced repp band weaving on their own or in other classes with Kerstin\, this workshop takes the next step to focus on pick-up patterns and other possibilities on these small\, versatile looms. Students will start by weaving a band with patterned hearts and then discuss the planning and execution of other pick-up band patterns. \nThis virtual class is an excellent option for students who want a refresher on more advanced band weaving techniques\, have previously worked through basic projects from Kerstin’s book Simple Weave\, or have taken an in-person or virtual repp band weaving class with Kerstin previously. During work time\, discuss project options for small looms\, materials\, and weaving band tips. Plan for some additional weaving time on your own between the two sessions to get the most out of this project. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis class has some homework between the two sessions.\nAdvanced registration required.\nStudents provide their own materials for this virtual class and should be comfortable warping their small rigid heddle loom ahead of class; please see the full materials list here.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: Suitable for students with past weaving experience.\nAges: Suitable for ages 12+.\nVirtual class info: This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Nordic literature is full of diverse literary voices\, styles\, and genres. This September 2026 through May 2027 the ASI Nordic Book Circle will gather monthly\, in-person\, to read and discuss a work of Nordic literature in English translation. Our focus this year will be on works of literature written by women authors from across the Nordic world. DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at the Norwegian art of Skinnfell and create unique holiday ornaments and decorations. \nAdd some Skinnfell ornaments to your tree\, doorknob\, or holiday decorations this year. Skinnfell is a Norwegian embellished sheepskin\, traditionally printed with wood block stamps. While learning about the unique history of this craft\, participants will cut\, print\, and stitch two ornaments from pieces of tanned sheepskins. Instructor Becky Utecht will present a variety of ornament options and share traditional Norwegian wood blocks to use in class. DESCRIPTION:Expand your carving skills in this three-session chip carving workshop led by woodcarvers Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes. \nThis class takes place over three Wednesday evenings\, 6-8:30 pm on December 2\, 9\, and 16.\n  \nExplore the technique of chip carving in the Scandinavian style. Chip carving is an old and useful form of decoration for woodenware of all kinds\, including bowls\, plates\, spoons\, and decorative boxes or signs. It is also perfect for making a beautiful and unique heirloom ornament. In this three-session workshop\, students will work alongside woodcarvers Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes to learn basic chip carving techniques and then decorate a small wooden ornament. Basic chip carving techniques\, such as tool options and care\, wood and pattern selection\, and finishing projects\, will also be covered as time allows. Students will leave with the skills to practice chip carving more at home\, along with an ornament perfect for displaying on a Christmas tree or giving as a special gift. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $15 materials fee is due to the instructors in class. Bring your nyckelharpa\, hardingfele\, fiddle\, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This jam is open to musicians of all levels who want to learn and play Nordic folk music. Bring your friends or plan to make new ones here! \nMinnesota has long been known for its rich music scenes—in part due to the many immigrant diasporas that have established themselves in the area. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots festival\, to the countless house jams across the state\, Nordic folk music is an important part of Minnesota’s musical identity. Whether you’re a master fiddler or want to learn more about folk music\, this monthly gathering is for you! \nThis jam is facilitated by ASI staff\, but tunes are selected each time by musicians in the room. We will play standards and originals inspired by the folk traditions of Sweden\, Norway\, Finland\, Denmark\, and Iceland. While many musicians may bring traditional instruments\, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to participate. If you do not play an instrument\, you can still attend if you respectfully observe and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required—see you there! No advanced registration required.

Shop ASI’s own Jul Shop\, alongside distinctive artisan glass\, home goods\, hand-carved items\, jewelry\, ceramics\, and textiles from over 60 artisans. \nASI’s Julmarknad is one of the busiest and most magical weekends of the year. Join us Friday night for a special preview party and first pick of shopping\, or attend Sunday for the full festival experience. Kristi Bissell of True North Kitchen will share some of her favorite seasonal recipes\, including her take on Swedish mulled wine or glögg\, a trio of mini open-faced sandwiches\, and a Pear Cardamom Cake. Whether you are inspired to host a feast or incorporate these recipes into other seasonal meals\, you’ll be set with great options for savory and sweet nibbles throughout the holidays. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis class is designed as a demonstration so students can watch the entire process and ask questions before tackling the recipe at home later.\nThe recipe packet will be shared via email and available for download one week in advance.\n\nVirtual class information: \n\nThis live virtual class\, taught over Zoom\, includes access to the class recording for one month after the class; registrants may attend live or watch the recording at their convenience during that time.\nStudents need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.
