This group featuring flute\, oboe\, clarinet\, horn and bassoon will present works by Nordic composers. Founded in 1965\, the Wingra Wind Quintet is one of the longest-running quintets in the nation. Known for artistic and pedagogical excellence\, the ensemble has consistently presented concerts and workshops around the globe to rave reviews. \nThe FIKA Supper Club series brings Nordic-inflected folk\, jazz and classical artists to ASI. Optionally\, guests may enjoy extended dinner hours at FIKA Café before the concert\, then step into Larson Hall for a musical treat beginning at 7 pm. SUMMARY:Advanced Band Weaving Workshop with Kerstin Neumüller
DESCRIPTION:This course takes place online over two days\, Sat\, Nov 21\, and Sun\, Nov 22\, from 10 am-12 pm CST both sessions. \n\nJoin Swedish textile artist and educator Kerstin Neumüller for two online sessions focused on more advanced techniques on a small rigid heddle-style band weaving loom. Suitable for students who have previously practiced repp band weaving on their own or in other classes with Kerstin\, this workshop takes the next step to focus on pick-up patterns and other possibilities on these small\, versatile looms. Students will start by weaving a band with patterned hearts and then discuss the planning and execution of other pick-up band patterns. \nThis virtual class is an excellent option for students who want a refresher on more advanced band weaving techniques\, have previously worked through basic projects from Kerstin’s book Simple Weave\, or have taken an in-person or virtual repp band weaving class with Kerstin previously. During work time\, discuss project options for small looms\, materials\, and weaving band tips. SUMMARY:Weaving the Skruck Basket Workshop with Ty Sheaffer
DESCRIPTION:This class runs Fri\, Nov 6\, from 6-8 pm\, and Sat and Sun\, Nov 7-8\, 9 am-5 pm each day \n\nWeave a unique splint basket from Sweden’s Hälsingland province\, the skruck basket\, in this weekend-long workshop. Originally a practical pack style basket\, a skruck is a splint basket made from split willow and ash\, and unusual in that it is woven from the rim down. On Friday night\, class will gather for an orientation to the basket\, tools\, and classroom. On Saturday\, students will try out processing willow splints themselves using a brake from Sweden\, prepare their weaving material from ash and willow\, and prepare their basket rim. On Sunday\, students will weave and finish their baskets. Throughout the weekend\, additional topics will be discussed such as materials harvesting\, specialty tools\, and some Scandinavian basketry history. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis class runs Friday\, November 6 from 6-8 pm\, and Saturday and Sunday\, November 7-8\, 9 am-5 pm both days.\nAdvanced registration required. A discounted ticket price for ages 14-17 is available at checkout.\nA materials fee of $50 is due in class to instructor Ty Sheaffer and covers all the tools and materials for one small basket. A chef and IACP award-winning author\, Nichole has much to share about how contemporary Scandinavian cuisine offers a simple\, sustainable\, and satisfying approach to cooking and eating at home. In this book talk\, expect to hear about Nichole’s years of living in Denmark\, running Kantine restaurant in San Francisco\, and her journey to becoming a cookbook author\, as well as a few hints for favorite recipes from the book. \nAdditional information: \n\nA Q&A and opportunity for book signing will follow the discussion.\nGuests may also be interested in an opportunity to cook alongside Nichole in an intimate afternoon workshop.\nNichole Accettola is also the author of Scandinavian from Scratch: A Love Letter to the Baking of Denmark\, Norway and Sweden\, an IACP award winning cookbook.\nScandinavian from Scratch and Scandinavian Everyday are both available from the ASI Museum Store. DESCRIPTION:Explore the area once known as The Golden Mile on this guided walking tour of the blocks surrounding ASI. Discover stories of mansions built alongside the Turnblad Mansion and how this vibrant neighborhood has changed over time. \nThe tour will travel along public sidewalks for approximately one mile. The ticket includes museum admission. Wheelchairs and other assistive devices (such as canes or walkers) are welcome and should be provided by participants. Tours occur every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from August through October. Advanced registration required.
