DESCRIPTION:This program is sold out. To be added to the waitlist\, please call 612-871-4907.  \n\n\nThis class runs from Friday\, August 7\, to Sunday\, August 9\, 10 am–5 pm each day. \n\nJoin instructor Charles Banks as he shares flat plane figure carving techniques in the tradition of Harley Refsal. In this course\, students will use only a knife to carve a Nordic-inspired character in this introduction to the simplified world of flat-plane carving. This experience is open to new carvers and carvers with more experience. Get introduced to the history\, past\, and present carvers\, many figure carving options\, necessary cuts\, and finishing techniques\, culminating in a finished carving or two. \nAdditional information: \n\nMaterials and tools: Students pay a $10 materials fee per figure carving blank (a piece of wood ready to carve) and are welcome to bring their own tools or use a set provided by ASI.\nPhysical ability: This course requires a modest amount of dexterity and hand strength. DESCRIPTION:Families can explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and their favorite grownups\, this hands-on experience invites grownups and preschoolers to learn side by side through music\, movement\, creative play\, and seasonal activities. Inspired by Swedish preschools\, including forest schools where children spend most of their day outdoors\, this program embraces exploration and activities that build confidence and respect for nature. Participants will visit Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary with ASI educators and Garden Naturalists\, read stories\, sing songs\, and discover the Garden as it changes with the season. During the summer session\, children will learn about pollinators\, explore the trails on a guided sensory hike\, and experience the Garden’s colors\, sounds\, and textures. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary. An educator will meet participants at the entrance located close to the free parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Join us on the first Thursday of every month for Open Nordic Jam! \n\nHave you ever wanted to play music in the historic Turnblad Mansion? Now’s your chance! Bring your nyckelharpa\, hardingfele\, fiddle\, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This jam is open to musicians of all levels who want to learn and play Nordic folk music. Bring your friends or plan to make new ones here! \nMinnesota has long been known for its rich music scenes—in part due to the many immigrant diasporas that have established themselves in the area. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots festival\, to the countless house jams across the state\, Nordic folk music is an important part of Minnesota’s musical identity. Whether you’re a master fiddler or want to learn more about folk music\, this monthly gathering is for you! \nThis jam is facilitated by ASI staff\, but tunes are selected each time by musicians in the room. We will play standards and originals inspired by the folk traditions of Sweden\, Norway\, Finland\, Denmark\, and Iceland. While many musicians may bring traditional instruments\, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to participate. If you do not play an instrument\, you can still attend if you respectfully observe and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required—see you there! No advanced registration required.

His research and teaching focus on comparing U.S. and Nordic approaches to sustainable business and examining American and Nordic varieties of capitalism with the aim of contributing to realizing sustainable capitalism. Robert teaches the suite of courses “Sustainable Capitalism in the Nordics?” which leverage his book Nordic Capitalism: Lessons for Realizing Sustainability Capitalism (Cambridge University Press\, 2026)\, available to read open access (free) at https://bit.ly/3MSvrOp. \nBefore joining Berkeley Haas in 2014\, Robert was an Assistant Professor at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark\, following a decade in Corporate America\, where he held various roles in manufacturing\, supply chain\, marketing\, strategy\, and investor relations at IBM and Boston Scientific. He holds a Ph.D. in corporate social responsibility from the Copenhagen Business School\, an MBA in international business from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management\, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to Norway hosted at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). \nWith his wife\, Sarah\, he is the proud parent of two wonderful children\, Jonas and Mikkel. He values a good sense of humor and kindness above all else\, and when that obituary is eventually written\, Robert hopes those qualities could potentially be said about him.

DESCRIPTION:This class meets weekly on Tuesdays from August 4-25\, 2026. \n\nThis class\, taught in Swedish\, is designed for students at A2-B1 levels who would like to dive into the rich trove of poetry written in Swedish during the 20th and 21st centuries. For the first half of class each week\, students will work in small groups with students of their same Swedish-language level to parse out and discuss a pre-assigned sampling of poems. During the second half of each class\, students will come together to discuss the assigned poems’ content\, structure\, tone\, voice\, and meaning. DESCRIPTION:This class meets weekly on Tuesdays from August 4-25\, 2026. \n\nIn this course\, taught in Swedish and designed for students at the B2 level\, students will read the lättläst version of Swedish author Elin Wägner’s novel Pennskaftet (1910). Set in Stockholm at the beginning of the 20th century\, the novel follows the daily life of “Penwoman\,” Barbro Magnus\, as she fights for and finds a place as a respected journalist in a male-dominated field and society. Set during the period when women in Sweden were fighting for the right to vote\, the book also introduces readers to an active group of female suffragists and sheds light on other issues related to class\, gender rights\, and female emancipation in Sweden at the time. \nAdditional information: \n\nWe will read between 20-30 pages each week\, assigned in advance each week by the instructor\, and we will complete the book by our last class session.\nRequired materials: Pennskaftet (lättläst)\, Elin Wägner. DESCRIPTION:This program has been canceled. \n\n\nThis class runs Saturday and Sunday\, August 1-2\, 9 am–5 pm both days. \n\nCarve your own wooden travel cup in the traditional Nordic green woodworking tradition. These durable\, hand-carved vessels\, typically made from renewable birch\, have a long and rich history. Whether simple in design or beautifully decorated\, they are versatile enough to serve as drinking cups\, bowls\, and scoops. In this two-day class\, students will dive into the history and significance of kuksa\, as well as design considerations\, materials\, and construction. The class starts with preparing a carving billet from a fresh log. Over the course of the weekend\, students will lay out their kuksa\, complete the hollowing process\, and then shape the outside of the kuksa. Finishing and decorating options will be discussed so students can choose what they want and make their cups their own after class. \nAdditional information: \n\nA $50 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class. Students should provide their own core tools\, including a carving axe and slojd knife. Optionally\, bring a hook or hollowing knife and any other favorite tools if you have them. DESCRIPTION:Make your own porridge bowls in this evening-long class! Decorate your bowl with any pattern\, from the charmingly iconic Dala horse to abstract patterns. Potter Sue Flanders will prepare two simple bisque ware bowls that hold about six to eight ounces of porridge or ice cream for each student. With plenty of inspiration from Sue\, students will use colorful underglazes to paint any pattern they choose\, whether they bring patterns from home or use one provided by the instructor. The students will coat the bowls with a clear glaze at the end of class to create a durable surface. Sue will fire the bowls after class and return them to ASI for pickup a few weeks later. \nAdditional information: \n\nAll materials are covered by a $30 materials fee due in class. DESCRIPTION:The Sámi (Northern Sámi: Sápmelaččat or Sámit) are the only recognized Indigenous people in Europe\, whose lands\, Sápmi\, are claimed and divided by the Norwegian\, Swedish\, Finnish\, and Russian nation-states. Despite the central roles they’ve played in the political\, economic\, and cultural histories of Northern Europe\, the Sámi are commonly depicted as ahistorical wildlings whose lands are an unused frontier\, ripe for development. This engaging series of lectures illuminates how untrue those depictions are. \nAbout the series: \n\nIn “Sámi History 101\,” we’ll examine the fundamentals of Sámi history and culture\, surveying oral histories\, subsistence practices\, societal organization\, and Sámi cultural icons.\nIn session two\, “Sámi History 102\,” we’ll expand on the topics in session one by inspecting how historical relations and archaeological\, linguistic\, and genetic studies contribute to the study of Sámi history.\nIn “Sámi Histories of Colonization\,” we’ll dive into how encroachment\, taxation\, and borders\, among others\, constructed and construct Fennoscandic colonialisms\, creating a timeline of how colonization has looked and still looks in Sápmi.\nIn the final segment\, “Sápmi Today\,” we’ll trace those legacies to the present to contextualize Sámi survivance\, or survival through resistance\, by examining political organizing\, rights\, and contemporary forms of colonization in Sápmi.\n\nAdditional information: \n\nA recommended reading and media list will be mailed out to all participants following the first session.\nThese live lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings over Zoom.\nAttendance requires a reliable internet connection and a device with audio and video functionality.\nAdvanced registration required; each lecture has a separate registration.

To be added to the waitlist\, please call 612-871-4907.  \n\n\nThis class meets over two days\, Saturday and Sunday July 25 and 26\, 10 am-5 pm both days. \n\nJoin textile artist Caroline Feyling in blending traditional and contemporary craft through band weaving! This portable and engaging technique is excellent for those with some weaving experience and enthusiastic beginners alike. For centuries\, weavers throughout Scandinavia\, the Baltics\, and Sápmi regions of northern Europe have woven intricately patterned bands using just a few simple tools. The bands are decorative yet incredibly practical (as garment edging\, hairbands\, apron belts and costume sashes). In this class\, students will learn Nordic pick-up style weaving using the traditional backstrap rigid heddle loom. Students will learn the entire weaving process\, starting with winding a warp\, threading the heddle\, weaving a band\, and finishing bands. Finished projects are suitable for use as belts\, straps\, and decorative edgings for clothing. \nTools and Materials: \n\nA $35 materials fee covers materials for two bands. Optionally\, students can purchase their weaving tools from the instructor at the end of class for an additional fee.\nIf you need it\, bring magnification (i.e.\, readers)\, a cushion for sitting on\, and your own document holder or pattern holder for easy pattern reading.\n\n  \nAdditional information: \n\nSkill Levels: Open to beginners but especially recommended for students with some past weaving experience\, including the plain weave band weaving class offered the day before.\nAges: Suitable for ages 14+. Handwoven bands can be so much more than trim or decoration. Bands woven on the band heddle date back hundreds of years in Scandinavia. Historically they were used for everything from hair ties to rope\, and even horse reins! In this one day intensive\, students will learn to backstrap weave plain weave bands on a band heddle loom. Each student will weave a short sample band along with a longer band between 36-72″ long. By the end of this class\, students will be able to design\, set up\, and weave plain weave bands independently. This portable and beginner friendly technique is an excellent first foray into the world of weaving. \nTools and Materials: \n\nA $30 materials fee covers materials for two bands. DESCRIPTION:The Sámi (Northern Sámi: Sápmelaččat or Sámit) are the only recognized Indigenous people in Europe\, whose lands\, Sápmi\, are claimed and divided by the Norwegian\, Swedish\, Finnish\, and Russian nation-states. Despite the central roles they’ve played in the political\, economic\, and cultural histories of Northern Europe\, the Sámi are commonly depicted as ahistorical wildlings whose lands are an unused frontier\, ripe for development. This engaging series of lectures illuminates how untrue those depictions are. \nAbout the series: \n\nIn “Sámi History 101\,” we’ll examine the fundamentals of Sámi history and culture\, surveying oral histories\, subsistence practices\, societal organization\, and Sámi cultural icons.\nIn session two\, “Sámi History 102\,” we’ll expand on the topics in session one by inspecting how historical relations and archaeological\, linguistic\, and genetic studies contribute to the study of Sámi history.\nIn “Sámi Histories of Colonization\,” we’ll dive into how encroachment\, taxation\, and borders\, among others\, constructed and construct Fennoscandic colonialisms\, creating a timeline of how colonization has looked and still looks in Sápmi.\nIn the final segment\, “Sápmi Today\,” we’ll trace those legacies to the present to contextualize Sámi survivance\, or survival through resistance\, by examining political organizing\, rights\, and contemporary forms of colonization in Sápmi.\n\nAdditional information: \n\nA recommended reading and media list will be mailed out to all participants following the first session.\nThese live lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings over Zoom.\nAttendance requires a reliable internet connection and a device with audio and video functionality.\nAdvanced registration required; each lecture has a separate registration.
