This class runs for three Tuesdays, December 2, 9, and 16, from 6-8:30 pm each session.

Explore the technique of chip carving in the Scandinavian style. Chip carving is an old and useful form of decoration for woodenware of all kinds, including bowls, plates, spoons, and decorative boxes or signs. It is also perfect for making a beautiful and unique heirloom ornament. In this three-session workshop, students will work alongside woodcarvers Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes to learn basic chip carving techniques and then decorate a small wooden ornament. Basic chip carving techniques, such as tool options and care, wood and pattern selection, and finishing projects, will also be covered as time allows. Students will leave with the skills to practice chip carving more at home, along with an ornament perfect for displaying on a Christmas tree or giving as a special gift. Physical ability: Please note, carving requires some hand strength and flexibility. Skill level: Open to all skill levels. Ages: Suitable for ages 18+. A $15 materials fee is due to the instructors in class. Students are invited provide their own chip carving knife (suggested style: Pfeil Swiss chip carving knife #2) and bring a leather strop for sharpening in class if they have them; the instructors also have tools to lend.
