Join us in January to explore the tradition of fika with Patrice Johnson. \nPreschoolers and their important grown-ups discover the joy of fika during this flavorful morning at ASI. Beloved Nordic Table and Cooking & Culture Camp instructor Patrice Johnson introduces participants to the foods\, traditions\, and stories behind this cherished Swedish custom. Together\, preschoolers and their important grown-ups explore questions like\, “What do Swedish families eat for fika?” and “Why do they do it?” Through hands-on activities\, preschoolers decorate their own apron\, take home recipes\, and gather ideas for starting a fika tradition at home. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis program is designed specifically for children ages 3–5 and their important grown-ups.\nMuseum admission is included with registration.\nAdult admission is included with child registration.\nAdult accompaniment is required.\nThe program limits attendance to one adult per registered preschooler.\nPlease arrive 15 minutes early so the program can begin promptly at 10 a.m.\nRegister by December 30.\nASI may cancel the program due to low registration.

This playful celebration is inspired by Astrid Lindgren’s beloved Pippi Longstocking stories. \n\nThis program will go on sale Monday\, September 28 (ASI members) and Friday\, October 2 (public). \n\nPippi’s After Christmas Party invites children and their important grown ups to celebrate julgransplundring\, a beloved Swedish tradition that gives the holiday season one final burst of music\, laughter\, and togetherness. In Sweden\, julgransplundring marks the end of the Christmas season\, when families and friends gather one last time to enjoy the Christmas tree before putting away the holiday decorations. At ASI\, all ages can discover this joyful tradition and send the season off with one last celebration as the Christmas tree comes down. \nInspired by Astrid Lindgren’s beloved Pippi Longstocking stories\, this playful celebration brings the spirit of Villa Villekulla to ASI. Pippi Longstocking herself will join the celebration\, giving participants the opportunity to interact with Pippi\, embrace her playful spirit\, and create cheerful memories together. \nASI educators and Ross Sutter will lead an afternoon filled with creativity\, crafts\, music\, movement\, and holiday fun. Children and their important grown ups can make decorations\, dance around the Christmas trees\, play\, and enjoy one final burst of holiday joy together. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis program welcomes children and their important grown-ups of all ages.\nFood and beverages are available for purchase at FIKA Cafe and may be enjoyed during the program.\nMuseum admission is included with registration\, allowing participants to continue exploring ASI after the program.

DESCRIPTION:Students in grades K-2 are invited to explore Nordic handcraft in the monthly Starting with Slöjd program. This month’s focus is paper quilling. \nStarting with Slöjd is a monthly program for early elementary students. Participants explore new tools\, materials\, and skills that prepare them for a lifelong love of handcraft. This month\, we’re making one-of-a-kind Valentine’s Day cards! \nAnna Ruhland will teach young makers the art of paper quilling\, using a variety of techniques to make different shapes out of colorful paper. These shapes can then be glued onto a Valentine’s Day card! \nAdditional information: \n\nThese are drop-off programs. SUMMARY:Preschool Program: Alla Hjärtans Dag
DESCRIPTION:ASI’s Preschool Program creates opportunities for families to experience Swedish art\, culture\, and traditions together. Join us in February to explore Alla Hjärtans Dag. \nPreschoolers and their important grown-ups discover how Swedish families celebrate Alla Hjärtans Dag\, or “All Hearts’ Day\,” during this special morning at ASI. Through stories\, crafts\, and hands-on activities\, children explore how people in Sweden use this day to show care and appreciation for the people they love. Together\, preschoolers and their important grown-ups explore questions like\, “How do Swedish families celebrate Alla Hjärtans Dag?” and “Why do they celebrate it?” \nChildren will create a special craft\, taste Swedish candy\, and explore the Castle while discovering the traditions behind this heartwarming holiday. ASI educators guide preschoolers and their important grown-ups through a playful introduction to Swedish culture\, encouraging curiosity\, creativity\, and connection. Participants leave with new ideas for celebrating kindness and togetherness at home. \nAdditional information: \n\nThis program is designed specifically for children ages 3–5 and their important grown-ups.\nMuseum admission is included with registration.\nAdult admission is included with child registration.\nAdult accompaniment is required.\nThe program limits attendance to one adult per registered preschooler.\nPlease arrive 15 minutes early so the program can begin promptly at 10 am.\nRegister by Friday\, February 5.\nASI may cancel the program due to low registration.

Participants explore new tools\, techniques\, and materials that prepare them for a lifelong love of handcraft. \nLearn the basic techniques of tin embossing from instructor Anna Ruhland and make a garland of handmade hearts. Students can also add felted elements to their project. Perfect for Valentine’s Day! \nAdditional information: \n\nThis is a drop-off program. Adults may not accompany children during this program.\nSuitable for students currently in grades 3-5.\nAdvanced registration required.

SUMMARY:Intergenerational Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Felted Heart Garland
DESCRIPTION:Explore needle-felting with felter Jen Newberg and create a needle-felted heart garland made of colorful wool for Valentine’s Day. \nMake a sweet garland of colorful wooly hearts just in time for Valentine’s Day! Felter Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults through the process of shaping and decorating a set of wool hearts using the magical technique of needle felting\, then string them together into a garland. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $25 materials fee is due in class to the instructor\, and covers all materials and tools.\nPhoto Credit: Jen Newburg\n\nPrerequisites: \n\nThis program is for one child and one adult to attend together\, and each will work on their own projects.\nPlease reach out if you wish to confirm available space for additional children to attend with a registered adult.\nSkill Level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: This program is for children ages 5-10 and an adult.
