SUMMARY:Intergenerational Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Felted Flower Garland with Jen Newburg
DESCRIPTION:Make a sweet garland of colorful wool flowers! Felter Jen will lead kids and their important adults through the process of shaping and decorating a set of flowers using the magical technique of needle felting. Participants will then string them together onto a garland that is perfect for summer decor but can also stay year-round. Using a needle to poke colorful wool into shapes is a fun and easy craft for all ages and this project is especially suited for younger participants\, ages 5+\, with an accompanying adult. \nAdditional Information: \n\nIntergenerational program: This program is for one kid and one adult to attend together\, and each work on their own projects. SUMMARY:Preschool Program: Summer Nature Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Families can explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program. Designed for children ages 3-5 and their favorite grownups\, this hands-on experience invites grownups and preschoolers to learn side by side through music\, movement\, creative play\, and seasonal activities. Inspired by Swedish preschools\, including forest schools where children spend most of their day outdoors\, this program embraces exploration and activities that build confidence and respect for nature. Participants will visit Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary with ASI educators and Garden Naturalists\, read stories\, sing songs\, and discover the Garden as it changes with the season. During the summer session\, children will learn about pollinators\, explore the trails on a guided sensory hike\, and experience the Garden’s colors\, sounds\, and textures. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place at the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary. An educator will meet participants at the entrance located close to the free parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Make a sweet garland of colorful wool leaves and acorns to celebrate fall! Felter Jen Newburg will lead kids and their special adults by shaping and decorating a set of leaves and acorns using the magical needle felting technique. Participants will then string them together onto a garland they can hang for a little indoor fall color. Using a needle to poke colorful wool into shapes is a fun and easy craft for all ages\, and this project is especially suited for younger participants\, ages 5-10\, with an accompanying adult. SUMMARY:Preschool Program:  Slöjd & Spiders with Silverwood Park
DESCRIPTION:Families can explore Swedish and Swedish American culture through ASI’s Preschool Program with Silverwood Park. Designed for children ages 3-5 and their favorite grownups\, this hands-on experience invites children and grownups to learn side by side through music\, movement\, creative play\, and seasonal activities. \nInspired by Swedish preschools\, where children spend much of their day outdoors\, this program encourages exploration\, confidence\, and respect for nature. Participants will meet an ASI educator in the Silverwood parking lot and explore the park with ASI educators and Three Rivers Park District naturalists. Families will read stories\, sing songs\, and discover spiders\, spider webs\, and embroidery. Through Slöjd textile activities\, preschoolers explore the wonder of spider webs using natural materials while learning about craft\, creativity\, and the natural world\, with clear ties to Swedish tradition. \nAdditional information: \n\nThe program will take place rain or shine\, so participants should dress for the weather.\nAdult accompaniment and advance registration are required\, and one adult may attend per registered preschooler.\nFurther instructions will be emailed after registration.\nThe program may be canceled due to low registration\, so please register by Friday\, September 25 if you are interested.\nAdvanced registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Caregivers and infants up to 18 months are invited to experience the surreal photography of Finnish-Norwegian artists Riitta Ilkonen and Karoline Hjorth in the exhibition Eyes as Big as Plates. The exhibition presents whimsical portraits of people in harmony with nature and invites moments of wonder\, curiosity\, and connection while exploring ideas of identity\, belonging\, and place. \nIn the exhibition\, ASI educators will guide caregivers and babies through each stop offering simple\, age-appropriate activities that encourage looking closely\, noticing details\, and responding together. Caregivers carry infants at eye level and leave strollers behind\, creating an up-close experience with each artwork that supports shared attention and early visual exploration. \nEach thirty-minute tour offers a unique experience. Because not every stop can be included\, the October tour may feature different works of art and different activities than the July tour\, giving returning visitors something new to discover. The program continues with 15 minutes of sensory play in the Castle before it opens to the public\, extending the experience beyond the gallery through hands-on exploration designed for caregivers and babies. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdmission is included\, allowing participants to explore the exhibition\, the Turnblad Mansion\, the Family Gallery\, and ASI’s outdoor\, fenced-in spaces after the program.\nAdvanced registration is required.\nASI educators determine whether to run or cancel programs based on registration levels on the Friday before the scheduled prgoram date.
