In this workshop with florist-farmer Elle Sullivan of Mellifera Flowers\, students will practice techniques for achieving sculptural designs using florist mechanics and specialty ingredients. Each student will take cues from color theory to craft nuanced and expressive palettes\, work with larger vases (more flowers!) to try out dramatic arrangement styles and shapes\, and lean on instructor Elle for individual guidance for trying out new design techniques. Using a provided vase and reusable floral mechanics\, students will select their ingredients from Mellifera’s farm fresh “flower buffet\,” featuring September’s best blooms\, such as dahlias\, zinnias\, and eucalyptus. DESCRIPTION:Knit a headband with a traditional Bjärbo pattern in this afternoon-long workshop! Learn about the Binge (pronounced “Bing-ah”) tradition of knitting from Southwest Sweden’s Halland province. This style dates to the 1600s and is characterized by colorwork patterns and colors similar to Fair Isle\, and is often knit in a double-thickness fabric. In the workshop\, students will knit a wide ski headband using a traditional Bjärbo design motif from the Halland province. After a short presentation\, fiber artist Wendy Johnson will lead students through the steps of knitting the headband on circular needles. Students will need to complete their headband at home. The finished headband is perfect for keeping heads warm as the days get cold or to give as a gift! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $40 materials fee is due to the instructor in class. DESCRIPTION:This class meets Sat\, October 17 and Sun\, October 18\, 9 am-4 pm both days. \n\nA handmade hardcover book can record anything from journal entries to sketches\, recipes to guest remembrances. Get started with bookbinding while creating a hardcover book just the size and colors you need. This class focuses on a style of codex bookbinding (i.e.; folded pages attached to a binding) with a sewn text block\, resulting in a strong and firm set of pages inside a book cloth-wrapped hardcover. Working alongside instructor Maeve Gathje\, students will complete all the steps of binding at least one book\, and begin or even complete at least one more\, as well as leave with the skills and tools to continue binding books beyond the course. SUMMARY:Picture Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom Workshop with Kerstin Neumüller
DESCRIPTION:This course is online and will take place over two days\, Sat\, October 17 and Sun\, October 18 from 10 am-12 pm Central Time both sessions. \n\nJoin Swedish textile artist and educator Kerstin Neumüller for two online sessions focused on weaving a weft-facing repp band on a small rigid heddle-style band weaving loom. This type of weave uses the same tools as a warp-facing repp\, but a different technique. Instead of pulling the warp tight with the weft\, students will learn to give the weft more space and create a pattern that is built up as you weave\, much like drawing or picture. Kerstin will share various possible patterns\, giving students a starting place for designing their own band. This virtual class is an excellent option for students who have practiced band weaving on their own or in other classes with Kerstin. Students will work alongside Kerstin as she covers project options for small looms\, materials\, and tips for weft-faced weaving from her book Simple Weave. Starting with a porcelain pine tree shape\, students will create a variety of small holiday symbols to decorate the tree and paint it with colorful underglazes. Students can use templates and molds to fully decorate their luminary\, emitting a cozy light in their home once finished. Originally a practical pack style basket\, a skruck is a splint basket made from split willow and ash\, and unusual in that it is woven from the rim down. On Friday night\, class will gather for an orientation to the basket\, tools\, and classroom. On Saturday\, students will try out processing willow splints themselves using a brake from Sweden\, prepare their weaving material from ash and willow\, and prepare their basket rim. On Sunday\, students will weave and finish their baskets. The size of the completed basket will vary based on each’s student’s pace; most students will complete a basket about 8” tall.\nStudents may also bring their own work gloves and a Mora style carving knife\, if they have one.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nPhysical ability: Basketry requires average hand strength and dexterity to complete a project\, such as being able to open a jam jar.\nSkill level: This course welcomes students of all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 16+\, or 14-15 registered alongside an accompanying adult. SUMMARY:Nordic Herbals for Winter Workshop with Gigi Risberg Stafne
DESCRIPTION:Taking inspiration from Nordic herbal traditions\, spend a day exploring medicinal herbs to carry your family through a long\, introspective winter. Master herbalist and experienced instructor Gigi will share both modern herbal medicine and the healing traditions from her Nordic heritage through hands-on projects and discussion. Students will create four to five herbal preparations to take home. Come share a day of hygge (coziness) that will bolster your body and spirit as the days become shorter! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $30 materials fee is due in class to the instructor and covers all herbal preparations.\nStudents should also bring a tightly lidded jar and a bag to bring their creations home.\n\nPrerequisites \n\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.
