DESCRIPTION:Bring a Swedish creature to life by carving your very own Mörksugga\, or “Dark Sow.” This creature could be called one of Dalarna’s other most recognizable icons (after the Dala horse\, of course)\, and today often appears in homes as a gentle watcher on bookshelves or window ledges. In this carving class open to all skill levels\, students will practice using simple hand tools to carve their own dark pigs and paint them with non-toxic milk paint\, then add a tail made from wire\, yarn\, and small weight. SUMMARY:Design and Weave a Repp Band Workshop with Kerstin Neumuller
DESCRIPTION:This course is online and will take place over two days\, Sat\, September 12\, and Sun\, September 13\, from 10 am-12 pm Central Time both sessions. \n\nJoin Swedish textile artist and educator Kerstin Neumüller for two online sessions to design and start weaving a repp band on a small rigid heddle-style band weaving loom. The first session will focus on creating different patterns in woven repp bands\, a style in which warp threads tightly cover the weft threads. Kerstin will share various possible patterns\, providing students with a starting point for designing their band. Students will then use any small rigid heddle-style loom they have on hand and their yarn to prepare the warp and weft for weaving a repp band in the second class. \nThis Virtual class is an excellent option for students needing a refresher on band weaving or anyone who owns Kerstin’s book\, Simple Weave\, but wants to work alongside her live. DESCRIPTION:Pick your pumpkin from the patch and carve it into a permanent luminary as the days get darker! Ceramicist Kim Burnham of Imokim Pottery will provide each student with a hollow pumpkin form (about 6” tall) in the greenware stage\, ready to be customized. Inspired by their pumpkin’s unique shape\, students can add ridges\, a face\, or other carved designs that will be highlighted by a glowing candle. Finally\, students choose a glaze color. Students will have the option to use either clear glass or transparent colors for the night light base. DESCRIPTION:Go big and bold with floral design while tackling a statement floral arrangement! In this workshop with florist-farmer Elle Sullivan of Mellifera Flowers\, students will practice techniques for achieving sculptural designs using florist mechanics and specialty ingredients. Each student will take cues from color theory to craft nuanced and expressive palettes\, work with larger vases (more flowers!) to try out dramatic arrangement styles and shapes\, and lean on instructor Elle for individual guidance for trying out new design techniques. Using a provided vase and reusable floral mechanics\, students will select their ingredients from Mellifera’s farm fresh “flower buffet\,” featuring September’s best blooms\, such as dahlias\, zinnias\, and eucalyptus. DESCRIPTION:Knit a headband with a traditional Bjärbo pattern in this afternoon-long workshop! Learn about the Binge (pronounced “Bing-ah”) tradition of knitting from Southwest Sweden’s Halland province. This style dates to the 1600s and is characterized by colorwork patterns and colors similar to Fair Isle\, and is often knit in a double-thickness fabric. In the workshop\, students will knit a wide ski headband using a traditional Bjärbo design motif from the Halland province. After a short presentation\, fiber artist Wendy Johnson will lead students through the steps of knitting the headband on circular needles. Students will need to complete their headband at home. The finished headband is perfect for keeping heads warm as the days get cold or to give as a gift! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $40 materials fee is due to the instructor in class. SUMMARY:Binding a Hardcover Book Workshop with Maeve Gathje
DESCRIPTION:This class meets Sat\, October 17 and Sun\, October 18\, 9 am-4 pm both days. \n\nA handmade hardcover book can record anything from journal entries to sketches\, recipes to guest remembrances. Get started with bookbinding while creating a hardcover book just the size and colors you need. This class focuses on a style of codex bookbinding (i.e.; folded pages attached to a binding) with a sewn text block\, resulting in a strong and firm set of pages inside a book cloth-wrapped hardcover. Working alongside instructor Maeve Gathje\, students will complete all the steps of binding at least one book\, and begin or even complete at least one more\, as well as leave with the skills and tools to continue binding books beyond the course. Throughout the class\, Maeve will address various tools\, alternative techniques\, design elements\, problem-solving strategies\, and questions about future adventures in bookbinding. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nAn $85 materials fee is due in class to the instructor and includes materials and tool use for at least two books.\nBooks need to be pressed overnight after binding\, and students have several options: they may provide their own book press (at least 8” x 14” and fits books up to 2” deep) or purchase one from the instructor for $45\, which allows them to take their books home on the last night of class. Alternatively\, students may leave their books pressing overnight at ASI and pick up their finished books later in the week for no additional charge.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.
