DESCRIPTION:Join carving instructor Maeve Gathje in a full day workshop focused on learning basic carving skills to create your own spreader or spatula. \nTry out Scandinavian-style woodcarving in this one-day hands on workshop. Students will work with fresh “green” wood\, a carving knife\, and a few other simple hand tools to make some simple kitchen tools. SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Start Carving Tiny Folk with Maeve Gathje
DESCRIPTION:Join carving instructor Maeve Gathje in a full-day workshop focused on honing carving skills to carve sculpted figures. \nJump into the world of Scandinavian-style flat plane carving in this one-day class\, focused on carving “tiny folk” or small characters. Maeve Gathje will get students started with the technique of carving faces and people “on the corner” of a rectangular block. In the morning\, students will start on their two 1″ x 1″ x 3″ figures\, about the size of a standard chess piece\, with a focus on the cuts that define faces. In the afternoon\, students will paint their characters using milk paint. Throughout the day\, tool and material selection\, knife safety techniques\, and finishing options will all be discussed. Students will go home ready to carve a whole village of characters! \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $40 is due to instructor Maeve Gathje in class and covers all required tools\, wood and milk paint for at least two 1″ x 1″x 3″ figures.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nPhysical ability: Wood carving requires good hand strength and dexterity\, such as being able to open a pickle jar.\nSkill level: This class is open to beginners or students with previous carving experience who would like a refresher on basic carving techniques.\nAges: Suitable for ages 16+\, or ages 14+ if registered alongside an accompanying adult. A discounted ticket price for youth is available at checkout.

SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Intro to Card Weaving Workshop with Josie Cooke
DESCRIPTION:Explore the art of card weaving with instructor Josie Cooke in this full-day workshop. \nCard weaving is an extremely old and important band weaving technique\, commonly used in Scandinavia to create beautifully patterned bands for edging textiles or using as apron strings or belts. While in the early Iron Age\, card woven bands were used to create the starting and selvedge bands for warp weighted looms\, today those same bands might be put to use as decorative edging on a sweater\, as straps for a bag\, or as a stylish lanyard for glasses or keys. In this one-day workshop\, students will choose from a variety of patterns and weave a band approximately 3/8″- 3/4″ wide and 24″-36″ long. At the end of the day\, students will leave with a set of cards and the skills to continue band weaving beyond class. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $25 materials fee is due in class to the instructor.\nStudents receive a set of cards to take home.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: This class is open to all experience levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 14+.

SUMMARY:Skinnfell – The Printed Sheepskin Workshop with Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the history of Norwegian Skinnfell\, embellished sheepskins\, while block printing and finishing a tanned sheepskin with instructors Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders. \nJoin Becky Utecht and Sue Flanders for a day long introduction to the Norwegian art of skinnfell\, an embellished sheepskin. Special attention will be given to the use of the instructors’ Norwegian print blocks and the symbolism of different patterns meant to bring good will to the user. Students will apply a “bridal” edging\, which will be completed after class. This class offers a broad overview to this unique craft\, which can be applied in many decorative and useful applications for future projects. \nPrerequisites: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nAges: This workshop welcomes students 16+. A discounted tuition is available for students ages 16-17 at checkout.\nSkill level: This workshop is open to all experience levels.\nPhysical: Please note that to complete this project\, students need good hand strength and flexibility\, as sewing leather is difficult hand work.\n\n  \nTools and Materials: \n\nA $115 materials fee covers one full sized tanned sheepskin\, use of the print blocks and paint\, and other necessary supplies.\nStudents are also encouraged to bring the following tools if possible: a large\, clear plastic quilting ruler; a small pair of very sharp scissors; several sturdy metal clips; a leather thimble; and a small jewelry pliers.

SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Dipped Beeswax Taper Candles with Sara Wait
DESCRIPTION:Join Slow Burn founder Sara Wait for a hands-on workshop centered around the art of dipping beeswax taper candles\, using an age-old method of candle making still practiced across Nordic cultures. Using local materials\, each participant will learn the traditional method of hand dipping pure beeswax taper candles: slowly building layers of beeswax onto cotton wicks\, one dip at a time\, until the tapers reach their full form. Each participant will make and take home a pair of 12″ taper candles\, perfect for gifting or adding a warm\, handmade touch to their home. No prior experience is necessary\, just a willingness to slow down and enjoy the rhythm of the wax. \nAdditional information: \n\nA $35 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class and covers materials for a pair of 12” taper candles.\nAdditional finished tapers might also be available to purchase\, depending on the number of students in the class.\n\nPrerequisites: \n\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.
