SUMMARY:Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Felted Globe Luminaries with Judy McDowell
DESCRIPTION:Learn from felting instructor Judy McDowell to create felted wool luminaries in this hands-on 5-hour workshop. \nCelebrate the return of light after the Winter Solstice by creating felted wool luminaries\, which bring a cozy glow even after the holiday season. Using traditional wet felting techniques\, students will work alongside felting instructor Judy McDowell to lay out wool in thin layers around a pattern\, add soapy water\, and roll\, rub\, and manipulate the wool into a perfect light-weight woolen globe that can be lit from within with a candle or string lights. Students can expect to leave the class with one to two finished luminaries\, depending on size. \nTools and Materials: \n\nA materials fee of about $20-$30 is payable to the instructor\, depending on the size of the projects chosen.\nStudents are also encouraged to bring 2-3 old bath towels\, a bag to take home wet projects in\, and an apron.\n\n  \nPrerequisites: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nPhysical ability: This workshop requires hand strength and some extended standing.\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 16+. A discounted price for youth is available at checkout.

Learn to work with straw like the Swedes do around the holidays! \nAnna Ruhland will teach students how to make star-shaped straw ornaments based on Swedish traditions. Students can use straw or compostable straws to create their ornaments. These projects make for great handmade holiday gifts! \nAdditional information: \n\nThese are drop-off programs. Adults may not accompany children during this program.\nSuitable for students who are currently in Kindergarten through 2nd grade (ages 6-8).

DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Nordic literature is full of diverse literary voices\, styles\, and genres. This September 2026 through May 2027 the ASI Nordic Book Circle will gather monthly\, in-person\, to read and discuss a work of Nordic literature in English translation. Our focus this year will be on works of literature written by women authors from across the Nordic world. The works we read will chronologically trace books penned between 1912 and 2020\, and include two winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature; authors from the countries of Sweden\, Norway\, Denmark\, Iceland\, Greenland; various genres; and a range of topics and perspectives. \nIf you love to read and discuss literature and would like to expand your appreciation of literature from various parts of the world (the Nordic world in particular)\, we would love to have you join!
