SUMMARY:Flat Plane Figure Carving Skills Workshop with Jock Holmen
DESCRIPTION:This class runs Wednesdays\, October 21-November 18\, 1-4 pm each session. \n\nBuild skills in Scandinavian style flat plane figure carving in this multi-week workshop. Geared towards students with previous figure carving experience\, this class will work on nuances of adding to details to figures’ faces and bodies. \nOver five weeks students will practice on sample sticks and bring previously started figures to life. This class will offer supportive and creative environment with focus on exploring new techniques. Please note that this class focuses on carving techniques only and painting will not be covered. \nAdditional information \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $10 materials fee is also due in class to instructor Jock Holmen for sample sticks and other materials. Additional blanks will also be available to purchase from the instructor. Bring your figures in process\, your own figure carving knife (flex cut #13 or similar)\, and carving glove.\n\nPrerequisites \n\nPhysical ability: Wood carving requires good hand strength and dexterity\, such as being able to open a pickle jar.\nSkill level: This class is open to students with some flat plane carving experience.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.

SUMMARY:Drawing and Carving Acanthus with Jock Holmen
DESCRIPTION:This class runs Wednesdays\, October 21-November 18\, 6-9 pm each session. \n\nNorwegian-style acanthus carvings are familiar to many appreciators of traditional Norwegian buildings\, wooden ware\, and other folk art—but before you can carve it\, you have to be able to draw it! Join woodcarver Jock Holmen for a five-week class to learn the basic “alphabet” of Norwegian carving\, first through drawing and then with chisels and gouges. Understanding how larger decorative carvings can be broken into individual components allows anyone to approach a new project with both precision and creativity. Throughout the five sessions\, this class will focus on design\, shape\, and basic building blocks to give students the tools to further their carving practice. \nAdditional information: \n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor. DESCRIPTION:Join a reading and conversation with award-winning poet and translator Fady Joudah\, presented by Milkweed Editions. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout EXHIBIT G: Fady Joudah writes from the split perspective of a Palestinian American physician caring for the sick while watching the destruction of Gaza from the United States\, a nation complicit in that destruction. He locates the paradox of his position everywhere: in the seed a sparrow eats from his proffered hand; in his writing in English\, the oppressor’s language; in the faces of Palestinian children receiving meals from aid kitchens—a glimpse into what his life could have been\, and what is being lost in a war disproportionately impacting children and their families. Throughout the book\, beauty insists on its survival not only through the Palestinian people\, but also through the nonhuman world in which he takes occasional refuge from the devastation that humanity brings upon itself. \n\nAbout the author: Fady Joudah is the author of […]\, a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize\, and Exhibit G. His other poetic works include: The Earth in the Attic; Alight; Textu\, a book-long sequence of short poems whose meter is based on cellphone character count; Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance; and Tethered to Stars. He has translated several collections of poetry from the Arabic and is the co-editor and co-founder of the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize. He was a winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition and has received the Jackson Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Banipal/Times Literary Supplement prize from the UK\, the Griffin Poetry Prize\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and the Arab American Book Award. He lives in Houston\, with his wife and kids\, where he practices internal medicine.
