Join Derek for a lively discussion about the importance of wild rice and incorporating wild foods into our modern diets. Derek will demonstrate a recipe utilizing wild rice and other foraged ingredient\, sharing his take on the connections between food and identity for the Anishinaabeg people as he cooks. \nASI’s food programs connect people as we celebrate\, learn\, and share stories together through cooking workshops\, demonstrations\, dinners\, and lectures. SUMMARY:Exploring Traditional Wooden Boatbuilding Techniques with Brian Thorkildson
DESCRIPTION:Wooden boats are fascinating objects—get just a taste of some of the traditional techniques needed to build them in this evening-long workshop. Students will have the opportunity to get hands on with specialty tools to make a small sample cross-section of a traditional Nordic wooden boat. With hand planes\, students will cut bevels on their planks and shape a frame section. Students will also make their own tree nails—the wooden nails that held the planks to the frames—and assemble their samples with rivets and trees nails into a small cross section of traditional Nordic boat. No past woodworking experience needed; this class is perfect for anyone excited about wood\, boats\, history\, or tools to try out something new. \n  \nAdditional information:\n\nAdvanced registration required.\nMaterials: A $25 materials fee is due in class and covers all tools and materials.\n\n  \nPrerequisites:\n\nSkill level: This class welcomes all skill levels.\nPhsyical ability: Some hand strength and dexterity is helpful to complete the project.\nAges: This class welcomes students ages 16+.
