SUMMARY:Hand-Sewn Leather Tote Bag Workshop with Candace LaCosse
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of sewing leather while making a sturdy and beautiful tote bag with Candace LaCosse of Hemlocks Leatherworks. In this one-day class\, students will work with prepared brown oil-tanned cowhide pieces and sew together a tote (approximately 16′ x 14′) and then cut and rivet on handles. Material sourcing and preparation\, leather cutting\, and sewing techniques will all be covered in instructor demonstrations\, leaving students ready to tackle their leather projects beyond class. Some students may also be interested in an additional half-day course to sew an accompanying wallet or clutch. \n  \nAdditional information:\n\nAdvanced registration required.\nA $120 materials fee is due in class to Candace LaCosse. Please bring magnification (i.e.; readers) if you need it for close work.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nPhysical ability: Sewing leather requires good hand strength and flexibility.\nSkill level: Open to all skill levels.\nAges: Suitable for ages 18+.

SUMMARY:Starting with  Slöjd: Weaving with Natural Materials
DESCRIPTION:Starting with Slöjd is a monthly program for early elementary students. Participants explore new tools\, materials\, and skills that prepare them for a lifelong love of handcraft. Instructor Anna Ruhland will lead students in gathering natural materials like sticks\, leaves\, and stems outdoors at the American Swedish Institute. Anna will then teach students how to weave these materials on a simple loom to create a unique and natural tapestry. \nAdditional Information: \n\nThis is a drop-off program. Adults may not accompany children during this program.\nSuitable for students in grades K-2.\nThis class will plan to take place outside. DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Nordic literature is full of diverse literary voices\, styles\, and genres. This September 2026 through May 2027 the ASI Nordic Book Circle will gather monthly\, in-person\, to read and discuss a work of Nordic literature in English translation. Our focus this year will be on works of literature written by women authors from across the Nordic world. The works we read will chronologically trace books penned between 1912 and 2020\, and include two winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature; authors from the countries of Sweden\, Norway\, Denmark\, Iceland\, Greenland; various genres; and a range of topics and perspectives. \nIf you love to read and discuss literature and would like to expand your appreciation of literature from various parts of the world (the Nordic world in particular)\, we would love to have you join!
