Workshop: Swedish Bonadsmålning with Egg Tempera

This class runs Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9, 10 am-5 pm both days.

Explore traditional Swedish painting techniques through this unique two day class. Swedish bonadsmålning flourished in southern Sweden during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was used to create wall decorations for modest country homes. Working on cloth or paper with homemade egg temperas, painters illustrated allegorical stories that blended Biblical themes, Swedish history, and contemporary rural life. With the guidance of folk art painter Pieper Fleck Bloomquist, students will craft their own egg yolk based paints and create a 8” x 10” folk art painting to take home. This class uses basic pattern with options for embellishment, and so is appropriate for all skill levels. Plenty of discussion and demonstration will explore traditional use of color and design. Suitable for ages 13+.

Students provide some of their own supplies (see materials list), and also pay a $20 materials fee to the instructor for a prepared canvas and other class supplies. Paints are provided by the instructor as a part of the materials fee.
