Workshop: Sawtooth Rimmed Baskets

This program is sold out. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist.

This class runs Saturday–Sunday, January 7–8, 10 am–5 pm both days.

Take inspiration from Minnesota’s North Shore and create a birch bark basket with a sawtooth border. Students will discover the beauty and strength of birch bark while weaving a medium sized table basket, perfect for organizing or displaying objects with its wide base (up to 12”), shallow walls, and sturdy rim. This rim design is perfect for adventurous beginners or intermediate basket weavers, adding a three dimensional pattern that mimics the zigzags of a sawtooth. Throughout the class, discussions will explore the history of birch bark basketry and ecology, sustainable bark harvest and preparation, and double-diagonal plaited weave technique.

This class requires good hand strength and dexterity, as students are expected to process their own weavers. Some experience basket weaving is helpful but not necessary; prior experience with handwork is very helpful. Most students find this class to be more difficult than expected.

A $90 materials fee covers all materials and tools.
