Workshop: Sámi-Inspired Bracelets with Liz Bucheit

This program is sold out. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist.

The indigenous Sámi people of Scandinavia incorporate elements of their northern landscape such as reindeer leather, braided pewter wire, and sculpted antler to embellish their clothing and handmade items.

In this afternoon-long class, students will use these materials to make a soft bracelet inspired by the tenntråd (pewter thread) embroidery techniques often found on Sámi handcraft. Students will learn to triple braid coiled pewter wire, then sew the finished braid to a softened reindeer leather strip and finish the bracelet with an antler button. Discover this unique tradition with veteran instructor Liz Bucheit and create a beautiful bracelet in just one day. Open to ages 16 and up.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($60 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes a reindeer leather base, pewter thread, antler button, plastic and finishing supplies. Students must also provide a pair of scissors, measuring tape or ruler, rubber cement or Aleene’s Tacky glue, toothpicks for glue application, and if needed a thimble and magnification/reading glasses. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute one week before class, starting January 27, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee.

Registration for this kit based class closes on January 23.
