Workshop: Painting with Wool – The Knotwork Dragon

This session meets over two Saturdays, March 12 from 2-5 pm and March 19 from 2-4 pm central time.

Recreate a fantastic Nordic-inspired dragon over this two-session intermediate needle felting class! In the first session, students will stretch a felt backing onto an embroidery hoop, then use needle felting techniques to transform a beautiful array of hand dyed roving from the instructor Laura Berlage’s own sheep into their own interpretation of the project’s basic design. Students will continue to work on their project in the week between sessions, ‘painting’ layers of wool to create an image with three-dimensional form and shaded colorwork. At the second session, the class will send time on troubleshooting and adding final details with beading and detail felting. The instructor will also share guidance for mounting or using your finished creation.

This class is suggested for students who have previous needle felting experience, and is suitable for ages 14 and up.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($35 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes a prepared felt backing, needle felting needles, beads for detail work, and ample wool for their project. Students must also provide their own needle felting base or mat and an 8” inch embroidery hoop – these supplies can be ordered separately from the instructor (see bio link below), found online, or purchased locally from many yarn or textile shops. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute starting March 3 or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee.

Registration for this kit based class closes February 27.
