Workshop: Light Optics in Blown Glass

This class runs Saturday, February 11, 11 am-6 pm and Sunday, February 12, 1-6 pm.

Join featured Swedish-American artist Jo Andersson for an intermediate glass blowing class at the Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts hot shop in this unique weekend long class. After meeting at ASI on Saturday morning to view Jo’s interactive light installation “Being” featured in the newly installed exhibition Fluidity: Identity in Swedish Glass, students will move to Foci’s south Minneapolis studio for two sessions of working with light optics in blown glass vessels. This class will be focused on process and experimentation rather than creating completely finished products, although students can expect to create an object to take home.

Schedule: On Saturday, February 11, students will meet at ASI at 11 am for a tour of Jo’s newly installed exhibition. Students will meet over lunch at ASI (bring a bag lunch or plan to purchase a lunch from FIKA café) and then proceed to Foci’s studios, about 10 minutes away, checking in by 2 pm. Class will work in the hot shop from 2-6 pm Saturday. On Sunday, February 12, students will return to Foci at 1 pm for one hour of classroom discussion followed by 4 hours in the hot shop from 2-6 pm. Glass objects may not be available for pick up until Monday, February 13.

All materials are included in the course fee. Suitable for advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced students ages 18+. At the very minimum, students must have previous basic glass blowing experience, including being able to gather and blow a bubble. Foci members also receive the member price for this class.
