Workshop: Danish Willow Basket Exploration

This class runs Friday-Sunday, September 30–October 2, 9 am–4:30 pm each day.

Explore the deep and wide tradition of willow basketry with renowned Danish basket maker Steen Madsen in this three-day course. In this open format, student directed course, students of all levels will choose from many types of projects to work on one or more projects based on their skill level and interest. Throughout the weekend, Steen will share his research of 7000 years of basket history in northern Europe and beyond.

Beginning students may expect to complete at least one round stake and strand basket while more advanced students may tackle an oval shaped basket. Smaller projects such as trays, rattles or bird feeders may also be covered. A $75 materials fee is included in tuition and covers all necessary materials. If possible, students should bring a sharp Mora 120 knife and a pair of good pruners (similar to a Felco No 6.) and may also bring other basket weaving tools if they have them. Good hand strength and flexibility is necessary to participate in this class.
