Workshop: Carved Wooden Utensil Kit

Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is required for all participants age 5 and up who plan to participate in this event. Please visit ASI’s Health and Safety overview for the most recent policy.

This class meets for two days, Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 from 10 am to 5 pm both days.

In this class students will not only take home their own set of non-disposable bespoke utensils in a sturdy canvas utensil holder, but they will spend a weekend learning traditional greenwood carving techniques, crafting their own traveling utensils kit of chopsticks, spoons, spreading knife, and fork.

Starting with a log and splitting the wood into usable blanks with axes and mauls, students will continue processing the wood into smaller, more functional pieces by carving with a slojd knife and other simple tools. We’ll discuss design, utility, and detail throughout the course, and you will go home with a unique set of reusable woodenware utensils as well as an arsenal of woodcarving skills to continue the practice on your own. Students will also have the option to indigo dye their cotton utensil wraps.

This class requires good hand and arm strength and dexterity and is suitable for ages 14+. Some previous carving or wood working experience is encouraged but not required.
