Workshop: Birch Bark Star Ornaments

This program is sold out. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist.

The stunning white paper bark from the birch tree is an iconic northern material. This holiday, create two beautiful, Nordic style star ornaments for display or gifting. Students will have the chance to work with this unique natural material, harvested by instructor Beth Homa Kraus, while learning about the ecology, harvest, and processing of this material. Careful folding and lots of patience will be rewarded with two beautiful birch bark star ornaments. Please note that this class requires some hand strength and good finger dexterity. The birch bark is usually treated with walnut oil, so if you have a nut allergy, please let us know during registration so the instructor can prepare a nut free kit for you.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($35 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes enough materials to make two stars. Students must also supply a pair of scissors and a darning needle. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute starting December 7, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this kit-based class closes December 1 or whenever sold out.

Two sessions of this class are offered; check availability for the other class here.
