This class runs for three Fridays, May 2, 9, and 16, from 2–4 pm each session.
Explore the world of blackwork embroidery in both its counted and freestyle forms using hand-dyed wool thread from the instructor’s sheep. This type of embroidery was popularized in the 16th and 17th centuries. While the elite stitched blackwork using silk, everyday folks with time and skill could create a similar look using wool. This class is a great way for students with some embroidery experience to build a stitch repertoire and learn to use it on different shapes and fabrics. The two projects covered include a flower pin cushion with floral motifs and a geometric biscornu inspired by Selbu designs. Both designs can be finished as pin cushions or stuffed with dried lavender as sachets, with a finished width of approximately five inches. These beautiful and functional objects make wonderful home accents or gifts.
This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities. The instructor will provide additional instructional PDFs.
Kits ($45 value) are included in the class fee. The class kit includes light-colored cotton fabric, wool yarn, embroidery needle, and paper patterns.
Students must provide fabric scissors, sharp thread scissors, a sewing needle and thread in harmonious color(s) for assembly of the flower pin cushion (optionally, most of it can be machine sewn), and 2-4 buttons or large beads to finish the center, fabric pins or clips, an 8-inch embroidery hoop, and fiber fill or wool roving/batting for stuffing. Alternatively, you can use dried lavender in addition to your fill material or an alternative stuffing material if you prefer.
Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute starting April 24 or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this kit-based class closes April 18 or whenever sold out.
