Wire Candleholders

Get to work on a candleholder or two in the Swedish folk art style! Using simple hand tools, wire, and perhaps a few beads for color and shine, students will practice the Swedish art of wire work (luffarslöjd) while making a votive or taper style candle holder.

Luffarslöjd is an art form originating in Swedish rural life, when luffare, or itinerant peddlers, went from farmstead to farmstead, transforming scrap metal into various vessels to be used around the home and farmyard. Everything from metal hooks and baskets, to bowls, egg cups and candle holders could be made from simple wire and creativity. Today, this unique craft offers modern makers the chance to create beautiful and useful objects from easily accessible tools and materials while preserving an important Swedish folk art. Candleholders are just the start!

Please note, students need moderate hand strength and dexterity to complete these projects. A $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class and covers all materials and tools. Suitable for ages 16+.
