Tonal Dyeing on Yarn

This class runs three Tuesdays, March 19-April 2, 5-7 pm CDT each session.

Experiment with tonal dyeing on yarn in this three-session virtual workshop! Textile artist Lesley Darling will walk students through the process of layering colors using cold mordents and dye extracts to create vibrant, interesting yarns. Students will use a prepared kit to practice dyeing between sessions, while virtual class time will focus on theory, demos, questions, and reflection. This class is perfect for students ready to dig into the chemistry, process, and learning of working with natural dye extracts; some previous experience with dyeing such as familiarity with protein/plant-based fibers and mordanting is recommended.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($65 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes yarn for two projects, dye extracts and other additives. Students must also provide a craft only vessel and utensil for dyeing. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute starting March 14, or can be shipped for an additional $10 fee. Registration for this kit-based class closes March 8 or whenever sold out.
